Riekie
A few days ago my CD/DVD drive started opening & closing involuntarily - even when I'm not even near my PC! At this stage it is open and won't close!! (If I press the button for it to close, it will close, but opens again soon after... ) The drive works - plays music CD's & I can write stuff to it from Sonic. For some reason my "Write this file to CD" option in Windows has also disappeared..... I'm completely confused (Hubby phoned HP support, paid $46 for their "time" and got no further - they say it's XP...) I've run all my updates, my virus program is up to date, I scanned my PC and got the "all clear". What's next?? Please help, I'm going to throw this thing out the window!! (PS: I'm technologically challenged, so please use "user friendly" terminology )

choog
The drive could be faulty, or else its waiting for you to put your coffee on it.

Riekie
I had this once. Do the following: Next time it comes out slap it as hard as you can. It will not do it again..! Wha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha!!!!! OK, that was seriously funny!!! Thanks everyone - I think I'll get a new drive then (after checking out the virus site...) If all else fails, I'll use it as a coffee-cup holder as suggested! Will keep you posted...
Janneman
For some reason my "Write this file to CD" option in Windows has also disappeared...Riekie, this makes me wonder if you could have a software problem, meaning that Sonic has picked up a bug (corrupted). I say this because the software used for cd burning has the ability to eject your cd drive after completion of a task. And that might be your problem - the programme "thinking" it should eject the drive when it is not in use and doing so at regular intervals. You can try uninstalling the authoring package and reinstalling it. However, because of the intricacies of the Windows registry, it might not solve the problem. Give it a try anyway.
Bob
This sort of nonsense used to happen to me a bit with my all the old PCs I've used in the past.My new Apple Mac doesn't even have a tray . . . . just a slot in the side of the machine. Not much to stuff up there! On first getting it, I was wondering where my CDs and DVDs went, as I was looking at it and wondering why the tray wasn't popping out.Just one of the many little things I have to get used to on my Mac.
