Riekie Posted July 25, 2006 Report Share Posted July 25, 2006 If you're new to the forum or to Oz, and wondering how to meet other South Africans & forumites, go to the EVENTS sub-forum just a little further down on the forum menu. These events are open for all to attend and if you don't take the first plunge, you'll never get to know the wonderful people on this forum. Going to your first get-together can be quite a scary experience and you may find excuses not to go: "I'll go if I know someone else who's going"...... "What if I stand there with my papierbordjie vol koeksisters all by my lonesome self all night?"...... What if I don't like the people?"..... "What if they don't like me?"...... I know what it's like, believe me : been there, done that. I've met a lovely bunch of gals (and their families) and love to associate & socialise with them, which I never would have if I did not decide to go to my first get-together...... Still too shy? Here's my own take on Meeting South Africans in Oz 101:Smile & Greet Everyone when you arrive (Don't make a silent, undercover entrance and duck for the furthest corner)Introduce yourself - no one else is going to do it for youBe yourself - don't be pretentious Find a common point of reference to start a conversation (How long have you been here - seems to do the trick most of the time...)Move around - don't stay with a group if it's going nowhere - also the more people you meet, the more people you knowBe friendly and interested in what other people are discussing. (Don't make it all about you)Don't compare yourself Don't be put off by the loud crowd (it'd probably be ME, SS & Ajay!! He-He!! ) Be open minded and you'll have a good time!!If you still want to leave the back-door open, you can always leave your vleisie & coolbag in the boot and go check out the scene. If you like, it, go grab your stuff - if you don't say you've actually got another engagement and get the hell out of there!! He-He!! Surely you jest I'm just the slightly unhinged one, dreaming up get-rich-quick schemes Nope, but seriously folks, Riekie's advice is spot-on. Get out there and meet as many people as you can. Some you'll like and others you won't, but you'll never know if you don't try. I've met some great people through this forum and others through just saying yes to whatever social occassion we're invited to - if you widen your net, you're bound to find someone that you click with.
