Medicare Deductions on a Temporary Visa

Riekie

Recommended Posts

Some employers still deduct Medicare payments even if you have a temporary visa (you may not even be aware of that - check your payslip)!

You can get it back when you do your tax return, but you will need a letter from Tasmania. For that you must complete a form which you can download @ www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/yourhealth

Totally confused.... :ilikeit:

Also, not one of the forms on the medicare page looks like anything you can claim payments back on...

I'm totally confused too. Particularly the bit about a letter from Tasmania!

I can sort-of understand that if you are not an Australian Resident for tax purposes, you do not have to pay the medicare levy. Now I would have thought that if you correctly filled in the Tax File Number Declaration that you have to give to your employer, then the amount of tax they take off would take into account the fact that you don't have to pay the medicare levy. At least, the TFN Declaration form does ask if you are a resident for tax purposes, so they should know that you don't have to pay it. Maybe the message is that even if you fill in the TFN Declaration correctly, some employers don't deduct the correct amount. Can't you complain to the employer in that case?

Daar is 'n standaardvorm waarop jy by Medicare aansoek doen vir daai bevestiging.

eis by die ATO moet indien:

Is dit meer verstaanbaar? (Of is alles nou Grieks?!) :ilikeit:

Hey,

Oh ok, I get it. :ilikeit: Thanks for the info.

Question : Do you get the levies paid back to you at the end of the tax year, or only at the end of your visa term ? Which could be 4 years worth of payments in the case of a 457.

Love

SS

Aha! Dankie Riekie.

Woodag, I'm pretty sure that anyone who lives in Australia for the majority of the year (or will be for that tax year), and earns their income in Australia is resident for tax purposes... or is there somthing else I don't know... :ilikeit:

Groetnis,

Dreamy

Manlief se aansoek was binne 10 dae terug, so ek weet nie waar die 3 maande effek inkom nie......?? (Of dalk was hy net gelukkig?)

Anders kan jy dalk by Hendie vra.

Who knows? :ilikeit:

Thanks man <_<

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello,

We are also coming in on the 457 visa to Cooktown.

I thought one of the undertakings by the sponsor is to pay medical for the nominee(being us) it also says for their fmilies...is this true?or is it only for the main applicant?

If this is true should we join a medical aid scheme?

We ahe 3 kids aged 9;6 and 2 and medical for us is of utmost importance.

Please please give me some guidance with this.

Regards,

Tash

It usually covers the whole family - you will have to check with the employer as there are no "rules" for that. You do not qualify for medicare on a 457, so it will be a private health fund. The best way to go about this is to first check if you will all be covered by the employer's health fund or not. (I have posted a site where you can compare private health funds somewhere else on this forum - will see if I can find it).
