First things first

We land in Sydney 5/8 and staying with a mate for a night. We were hoping to go into a CBA branch on the Monday morning to activate a bank acc we have opened from here, then sort out a tax # and medicare - unsure about how to go about these two though.

We booked an airbnb for 6 nights and the idea is that I take the daughter (7yrs) to find a school and place to stay while the husband sets up app with employment agencies in that first week. Seems you want to find a school first and then a place to stay in the catchment area? Looking at Artarmon, Pymble, Summer Hill / Lane Cove for 2 bed @ R500pw.

Is there anything you suggest we do differently?

If you're in the city, I'd recommend going to the CBA branch at 48 Martin Place - its the most beautiful old building! You'll need to give CBA your Tax file number, so perhaps do that one first, or you can just supply it to them later on.

I believe that you can apply for your medicare at a myGov Sydney - they have a shop opposite the MLC Centre just down from the CBA building (32-36 Martin Place).

https://www.ato.gov.au/Forms/TFN---application-for-individuals/. You'll also want to set up a MyGov account (I think that you can do this online but check with them) - this then gives you access to Medicare and your ATO tax information / returns from one account.

For your drivers licences, there's a "Service NSW" office across the road from Wynyard Station at 19 York Street so you may as well get this ticked off the list as its close-by.

You can apply for your tax number online - https://www.ato.gov.au/Forms/TFN---application-for-individuals/

Thanks for this. As we'll only be looking at buying a car once we have jobs, would you suggest we get around by goget (I think?) car rental or train / bus to these places, schools and rental properties?

I haven't used Go-get myself but think that its a brilliant concept and a number of my colleagues use it - so yes. I'm not sure of what all the requirements are to sign up but believe that you can get your first year membership free if you sign up via Ikea. Check here: https://www.goget.com.au/ikea/. An alternative is https://www.carnextdoor.com.au/

Public transport in Sydney is pretty good and so you should also be able to get to most places if you don't have a car - download the https://www.opal.com.au/ or https://transportnsw.info/apps/tripview on your phone.

A reasonable car rental is https://www.bayswatercarrental.com.au/
