Medical Gap Cover

Do you need medical gap cover to supplement your medical aid shortfalls in Australia as you do in South Africa?

I guess it will all depend on what kind of private medical insurance you decide to take out. I am with HCF, 100% hospitalisation, so as long as I go to a hospital approved by them, then I will be covered. If you are talking about Medicare, the government system, then, as long as you go to a Bulk Billing GP, you will pay nothing further, but I do not know of any specialists that do bulk billing. Your GP can of course refer you to a hospital clinic, to see a specialist, but depending on the urgency of your situation, it could take many months before you see one.

Guys, I'm noticing a certain anxiousness with regards to medical aids in Australia.

Let me put it simply... You don't NEED private medical aid if you have Medicare access.  Private medical aid is a nice to have and even if you don't have it you'll be just fine.  It will, in essence, speed up treatment in some non-life threatening medical scenarios.

The government gives you a year from landing in Aus to pick your private medical aid (to avoid the Medicare levy), so my family is still rolling on good old state provided Medicare.

Hi @ChrisH,

Now that its been over a year since you arrived, I was just curious whether you have since chosen to take out private medical aid?

Yes - interested to know. Land there Australia in December and we are signing up for Medicare the day after we land - but on my list of things to do is research private medical care.

Yes I did, I went with Health Partners.

We had a first hand experience of the "its not life threatening so go onto the 1 year waiting list" situation.  My recommendation is for families to get private medical as it gives you immediate access to treatment when you need it.  Also saves on tax.
