Hopefully someone has some experience of this, or perhaps an agent could shed some light for me?
My son, who is 18 and in Matric, feels he may want to take a gap year next year. Now I know there are a myriad of views on this, but that's not what this post is about.
My question is about his options to do so in Australia as a secondary 489 visa holder who was a child dependent.
In order to be part of our 887 application down the line, we understand that he needs to remain dependent on us, so studying full time next year is the general recommendation.
However, if he decided to take a gap year, could he qualify on his own, independently, for his own 887 PR as a secondary 489 visa holder? I am aware that the 489 primary need not be the 887 primary- but can a secondary make a completely independent application, this is essentially my question, so apply independently and not as a part of the family unit they were originally granted a 489 visa under as a minor.

Many thanks!
