I have not mentioned the $1000 that she has cost us in medical bills, this year. It is to be expected though, as she is turning 16 on the 2nd April. She is not catered for in the budget, as she is a priority she comes first, then everything else is taken care of. Mel06 Posted June 14, 2017 Report Share Posted June 14, 2017 Living in Vic for a year, not too far from Mara. $4000 per month budget, - all insurances and rego's paid annually, including rates. - Bought land on arrival because of my bank history built up the previous 12 months,. - Land appreciates at 20-30% per annum, people queue up over night for lots of land, 400sqm land , 30km from the city is $320K , 40Km is $280K, etc. Build a home $300k min... total $600K for 4 bed on 450sqm lot. which u can afford on a combined income of $120K . - Family of 4 with primary school kidz. used cash for sold cars in SA to purchase cars in Oz. Melbourne is approx 50% cheaper in rent than Sydney. - do your best to be prepared on your arrival. Don't expect any welfare , there is none for anyone working and if you don't work, u will want to very quickly. - I should have moved 10 years ago, but we all say that once we are here - job market varies , and is very competitive - Melbourne is a world within a city, when u arrive you will understand, its great. You get very busy once you are here, its my first reply in 12 months since arriving, Cleaning services are $20-$50 per hour, Garden services are $60 per hour, childcare $116 per day, private school is $600 per month , i have none of these , and will not use it cause i keep converting to Rands ...lol and its R1200 to cut my grass. There are no unskilled labor as such, there are regulations on minimum wage. The state and Federal government are held accountable at all levels, 1 strike and you out.. eventually. Public transport is free before 715am and , limited to 8.50$ per day on all travels within zone 1 .. up to 50km train, tram , bus.1 card used called Myki Public transport runs around 93% KPI on their timetables Toll roads are approx 4- 18$ per day... if you encounter Tolls..its expensive when you compare it to GFIP aka ETolls in Gauteng , 46 Toll gantries or is it up to 52 now. Car rego is $800 per year Rates $1600 per year depending on area. Bob Posted August 1, 2018 Report Share Posted August 1, 2018 (edited) Wow, Mara. That's a fairly comprehensive budget listing a number of items. Just one or three queries??? I notice your electricity bills are quite high. Living in the Labor (mild socialist) government state of South Australia, our electricity bills were, at one stage, the most expensive per KW/hr throughout the world! . . . . . I kid you not. That prompted me to bite the bullet and install a solar electric system on the roof of my shed, to feed the house. Cost back in 2012 was $12,500 + $440 to change the old electricity meter box to read what I put into the state grid. I get paid 52c per KW that I stick back into the grid after supplying my house first. I haven't had a power bill in 6 years since installing the solar system. A mate even went as far as to take a credit card out, at 18% interest no less, pay for a small 2KW solar system for $6,000 with the credit card, and pay back the amount not only with what he used to pay regularly each quarter in power bills, since he now doesn't get a bill, but also the little bit of credit he received from AGL each quarter. He now has paid the credit card off and cut it up . . . and is laughing all the way to the bank. I don't know what the arrangements are in Victoria, but would it not pay you in some way to look into getting solar on your roof, if your roof catches a bit of sun each day?? Here in South Australia, electricity prices are only getting more and more expensive and solar is a fraction of the price to install nowadays. Also, with medication, I believe there is/was a safety net . . . . the Pharmaceuticals Benefit Scheme, brought in by John Howard, no less . . . . which allows you to list your medicines throughout the calendar year, and pay no more than a set fee, about $500 for a couple from memory. Everything you got from the chemist after having coughed up $500 was for free. Has that scheme been scrapped now? Lastly, you mentioned an 18,000 litre water tank. Living in the driest state in the Commonwealth of Australia, is there no way you can plumb that into your house to allow you to use rainwater in your laundry or toilet, for example, in order to keep your water useage down to a low level? When the winter rains come, friends of ours turn off the mains water altogether, and just use their rainwater tank to supply their whole house, thereby only using mains water for about 6 months of the year.
