Registering baby born in Aus on 457?

Aneldari

Question

Hi all

How would you go about registering a baby in South Africa (born in Aus while on temp 457 visa), get a South African birth certificate and apply for South African passport for baby? And what time frame can that all happen? Hopefully someone has gone through that process recently...

Thank you so much!

Cheers

Aneldari

Hi Aneldari,

In WA it is dead easy. You go to the Births, marriages and Deaths dept. Fill in the form, pay the fee and they issue you a birth cert on the spot. For SA its harder as you may expect. You need to download the forms from the DHA website, fill them in, send them to Canberra, and then wait. Like a lifetime.

Hey Surferman, just checking, if you are on a 457, can you actually register the birth in Australia? My knowledge was that you could only do that if you were on PR and not on a 457?

Hi Mara,

Not you are still required to register the childs birth in Aus, but the child not deemed a citizen if the parents are on a 457. In addition, if they are on PR but not for more than 12 months nobody is eligible for citizenship. Aus law requires the parents to register the child as a citizen of their country of birth.

So our youngest was registered as born in Aus but deemed a Saffer. that will change in the next few months!

hello,

just so you know the forms are no longer available online. you will have to contact the call centre.

they are very helpful.

Oh goodness...!

Knowfamily, by call centre, do you mean you have to call the local Canberra landline number that is listed under the contact page of the SA High Commission-Aus website or is there another number?

Thanks!

Can you please clarify what SA stands for in this sentence? is it South Australia or South Africa?
