Nev
So as a few of my posts have covered, this last year has been a particularly rubbish one, both personally and professionally, so it is time for something completely different. On the 13th of next month i will be unemployed, and 1 week later we will have moved a portion of our stuff into storage with the balance having already been sold. Then we hit the road in our camper, the plan is to make our way up to Canberra and spend a week or so there seeing the sights, then head up to Brisbane for December.Come January i will be looking for contracting work and moving around Australia based on the availability of contracts.I have a few options for permanent work so if I cant get contracting work within the first 6 months we will settle down to a permanent job again, but if i do we will almost certainly spend the next few years on the road seeing Australia and with the much lower cost of living we will hopefully get a bit of savings as well. Interesting times ahead Anyone up Canberra & Brisbane side of the world that wants to get together for a cup of coffee please send me a forum mail as i would love to meet more of the people behind the posts

wallyengles
That sounds like a fantastic idea Nev!Just out of interest, have you investigated camper relocations?http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/darwin-cbd/miscellaneous-goods/free-campervan-rental-relocation-and-ride-share-australia/1090065811I'm still in SA so I can't speak to the legitimacy of this, or if there are hidden catches. They do say they cover the fuel though which could be a huge plus. You'd basically only have to cover your own costs like food and stopovers. ottg
Hi Nev, I'm very jealous...it sounds very enticing to be able to pack-up and go! Was looking at campers recently as I accumulating long service leave.Something that may be of interest to you and perhaps others, as I was looking into it for a 2nd income, is freelancing. My be able to pickup opportunities as you move along and some very specific to online delivery services. Quite a wide variety available where some requires no skills, just an attitude :-) and others more professional skills. Peterthe1
You'll love the camping up here in QLD. Get in a bit of bushcamping, bush or beach, if you can. With regards to having a cup of coffee, when you get here, I'd aim for something colder. This summer in QLD is expected to be one of the hottest and driest in a while. I wish you the best with finding some work and enjoy your trip.
Nev
Thanks all, sounds good on the meetups i will let you all know when we get to specific areas, and something colder will do the trick nicely Nice one on the links ottg, i knew about elance but will check the rest out as well, chatted to a training company today about doing contract training for them, looking good so far. Nev
Nice one on the relocation but we have a camper already setup, more glamping than camping, 130L of water with electric taps, batteries supplying 12 & 220v, solar panels to recharge with, fold out stainless kitchen, fridge/freezer will be installed soon, queen size bed with a real mattress, hot water shower. There is also a front piece that attaches on that we dont have setup here, which we will put up when staying for more than a few days.(These photos are from the otways forests on the great ocean road)

RedPanda
Wow, Nev, glamping indeed... (I could get into that...) I'm really looking forward to having a safe 'great outdoors', apart from the snakes and spiders, but at least they don't carry guns, hehehe....These photos look amazing! I hope you have a wonderful time.
Nev
So, im officially unemployed now, the box arrives on Thursday for us to load the items we didnt sell into, and we on the road on Saturday,The plan is for about a 3 week trip to get up to Brisbane with 2 coastal stops and a stop in Canberra, cant wait to get going
RedPanda
If you get a chance near Brissie, try to go to Mooloolaba beach. It's our favourite Aussie beach, after introduction to it by my cousins who live in Brisbane. It's beautiful, relaxed and not overcrowded. BrendanH
As a fisherman and camper I am feeling a mite jealous looking at photos of some of those spots. Been years since I felt safe enough to randomly camp out like that. Good luck and have some fun.
Guest
All sounds very exciting Nev but very Australian...I know so many families taking their kids out of school to homeschool and travel around Oz. What a great experience for you and your family. ? Are you heading out to Melbourne?
Nev
Spent 4 years in melbourne so that was the start, but we will be back in melbourne about every 3 months for my wife's medical checkups for the next year.We hit the road on Saturday and are currently at Pambula beach, about 500km south of Sydney, and with it being midweek and out of season it is really quiet. The Great Ocean Road awaits!!Hmmf...that Great Ocean Road has proven pretty elusive so far. Don't let it fool you with the line "But I'm a road, I'm stationary..." (Hahaha...this said because certain RedPandas have been in Melbourne twice now, and wanted to drive along it on both occasions, but we were unable to. Oh, well, we'll catch it eventually!)
