Working as a Teacher of the hearing impaired

Hi everyone,

I hope someone will be able to shed some light on my situation.

I am hopefully weeks away from a positive skills assessment as a ' primary school teacher ' (fingers crossed) . I have also been completing my honours to be qualified to teach the deaf. I will also be finished with that in a few weeks ( after 2 year of damn hard work ).

My question is : will I need to be re-assessed if I want to work as a teacher for hearing impaired or is the skills assessment purely for visa reasons?

Thanks in advance for any help...

No. Currently once you have a PR visa you are not required to be employed in your occupation. You may exit the workforce altogether.

New Zealand is much further down the track than Australia with this issue. NZ has identified that a number of immigrants are accepted based on the occupation they apply under but then don't actually perform that occupation when they arrive in NZ. But even NZ hasn't done anything about it to date.

You may have to be assessed as part of the employment process to work with hearing impaired children.

Hi there. Yes 17yearsoutofrsa is correct. The skills assessment is only for visa purposes! You might however have to have your qualification assessed (like me) through another authority before you can work because you have an international degree. All that they do is compare your degree (so you need transcripts) to an Australian qualification and then give you a certificate to say that your international qualification is the equivalent to "so and so" Australian qualification.

I will try and have a look for you quickly what I can find.

Hi I found this: The National Association of Australian Teachers of the Deaf: http://www.naatd.org.au

Perhaps you can contact them to find out.

I also found this: http://www.myfuture.edu.au/The%20Facts/Work%20and%20Employment/Occupations/Details.aspx?anzsco=241511A

and http://career-advice.careerone.com.au/career-development/career-profile/primary-teacher-for-the-deaf-20060903/article.aspx

Deafness council of WA: http://www.deafnesscouncilwa.org.au/

Telethon speech and hearing centre: http://www.tsh.org.au/ (perhaps they can give you advice)

Hope you find some answers. Perhaps your qualifications will be accepted as it is, but you will definitely have to be registered with the teacher registration board.

You may exit the workforce altogether.

You can land and go straight to the beach for the rest of your life, provided you do not claim social benefit for the first 2 years.

BTW might be of interest to you

We attended the Brisbane festival last week for the Deaf Services for Auslan which is the sign language here. My husband is hearing impaired and my eldest has a hearing loss of 20% he wears hearing aids but didnt worry with sign language in SA as his school wasnt phased. The high school in Brisbane this year decided to incorporate deaf children into one class so both my kids learnt Auslan and Mandarin. They evens did a song in sign language. In class there is a mixture with an interpreter.

Also I dont pay anything towards R20k hearing aids...wish they would treat my kids glasses with the same attitude. Go figure.

Sorry a little off the topic/ if you maybe need to talk to the lady leading the initiative I can let you have her details and she can give you some advice. PM me.

This is very interesting, thank you! I have learnt SASL here in SA which is mainly based on Amercian sign language. So when I go to aus I would have to lead Auslan . I'm really looking forward to it because I've loved learning SASL. It's great that there is so much support for the Deaf in aus. So much of the research in the field comes from aus so I'm really looking forward to seeing it.
