ronfire
We've long wanted to visit the Apple Isle so we're taking the plunge and popping across to Tasmania for about 10 days in January, just before the kids start the new school year. We'll spend about 4 nights in Launceston, a night in Bicheno, and 4 nights in Hobart. We'll hire a car in Launceston and drive that around. So far, we've booked ourselves into the dusk penguin tour at Bicheno and we also plan a day trip to Cradle Mountain, as well as the assorted activities and attractions around both Launceston and Hobart, eg cataract Gorge, Cadbury, the various zoos and wildlife parks, etc. Question is - what would others suggest we see/do that is a bit off the beaten track? We generally enjoy driving around and walking around enjoying nature, and we're not particular about touristy things. We have a 9 and 3 year old with us, so some of our enthusiasm is tempered by those limitations! The boys like to have a bit of a run around so we plan to drive leisurely and stop frequently, both to give them a break and to look at stuff. joseph_c
The Island is a secret paradise, everywhere is worth seeing, but if you short on time, take a day off to go to Tazmazia, your kids will love it and you will enjoy the pancakes. http://www.tasmazia.com.au/ Edited October 19, 2013 by joseph_c

Awesome! Thanks, that's definitely going to be on the itinerary!!PS. The kids are both mad about pancakes, so they would go just for that!!
Mara
I have been to Tasmania twice, loved it both times. If you have the time, do visit Strahan, it is absolutely beautiful there. If you do get there then do take the boat ride, that was great and the scenery is spectacular. http://www.worldheritagecruises.com.au/

I don't think we'll be able to fit Strahan in this time. The main attraction was the train trip to Queenstown, but it seems there's no guarantee it'll be running in Jan, so we decided to skip Strahan, even though the cruise was very tempting. Cradle Mountain is as far as we'll go on that side, methinks, with just 10 days. If we could have stretched it for another 2 days....sighWe'll do that on our next trip...hehehe.
