Hi guys

We have a job opportunities in one of these areas......... Outer North East- Epping, South Morang, Templestowe and Bayside/South East- Mordialloc, Oakleigh, Clarinda......now we have not much of a clue on how these areas are in terms.......choosing a good area to raise kids in......affordable house rentals (eg. $350 etc etc.) and commuting from home to one of the above via public transport versus own transport.

Some good solid advice will appreciated.

Thanks guys.

It might also be good to let us know in which area of the job market you are looking for... aka profession :)

Templestowe is considered one of the best Suburbs in Melbourne but is definitely not what you would consider affordable. Mordialloc and Oakleigh will also be expensive.

Epping will be very affordable but has a bad reputation which pretty much leaves you with South Morang. Affordable and not too bad (some areas better than others) but quite far out and the train can be congested, and parking at the station hard to find. If you have work opportunities near South Morang then the train thing is not an issue.

Epping, would not be my choice

South Morang, there are some good parts, but if you work there you could also live in Bundoora or Greensborough

Templestowe, great area, although house rents are higher starting at $500+ and buying would probably start at around $650,000, however Doncaster is next door and could be slightly cheaper, there are excellent schools in Doncaster

Bayside and Mordialloc, Oakleigh, Clarinda, go with what Hansa says, I do not know those areas at all.

Since Mara mentioned Greensborough, I'll add to that. We've lived there for almost a year now and love it. It's quite spread out though and has different sides to it. The area near the town centre is becoming very popular and is undergoing a lot of renovation. Very suburban and quite busy.. We live in Apollo Parkways (Plenty River Drive area which is actually in a different council area but is still Greensborough) which really suits is. Close to nature, birds, trees, kangaroos, etc, and Apollo Parkways Primary is a good public school.

There are rentals to suit everybody but a decent 4 bed will cost $450 plus. That said, you could get a 3 bed for around $350 if you're lucky but it would be fairly basic.

Fairly close to Greensborough is also Eltham, Montmorency and Diamond Creek, all beautiful places to stay.

Go to http://www.realestate.com.au/rent

There you can have a look at rents, purchase prices, etc.

Bayside, especially close to the coast, can be very expensive, at $350 you would be looking at a 2 bed flat. But if you are interested in that area take a look a bit further inland and/or a bit further south. In that general area the further from the coast/CBD generally the rentals reduce.

The website provided by Mara has a map option and if you put the max price and number of beds you are after and look at the map you can see which areas have rentals in that range and then move in for a closer look at them.
