Question regarding accountants

Nope.

It does help if you have a qualification that you can have assessed as Australian equivalent though, or if you are able to register as a CA here.

I went to an information evening a few days ago in Melbourne.

It seems there are many applicants for each job. The presenters say that potential employers will give your CV ('Resume') perhaps 10 seconds before placing it on the 'perhaps' or 'no' pile. So you will need CPA / CA on the front page, near or just below your name. They then give the 'perhaps' pile another run of 20 seconds each. Australian resumes are all about readability, you want to have white space. You need to edit your CV for each role, (if you have the skills they are looking for, ensure they can see them easily) not bothering with the cover letter (unless requested) as no-one reads them. Do follow up your application with a phone call.

As far as they know, there are no specialist (accounting) skills that are highly in demand at the moment, like SAP. These may get you on the 'perhaps' pile if they listed a major ERP as a requirement. They are looking for people with the right technical skills when looking at CVs. The interview is about soft skills and cultural fit.

So, if you don't have CPA / CA you'll likely end up in the 'no' pile for most mid-level roles. It's an 'employers market' apparently, but then I've heard that before ... :grads: . Further qualifications such as MBA / MSC you do for your 'knowledge' and are not required for most roles.

What I thought really interesting is that they said 2/3 of all jobs here are matched without any agent involvement; so you need to build a network rapidly. They suggested you get really active on LinkedIn with a professional page (with photo), contribute to group discussions and make many connections. They could / would not comment too much about the hidden market.

Bear in mind that you might need to accept a more junior role until you've gained the Australian experience. Or is it 'network'?

Thanks for the info guys.

My wife is the accountant, we will wait for her skills assessment from the Australian authority and then see what they say.

Ok. Who is she doing her skills assessment through? I have just done mine through ICAA.

Assessment will be send to CPA(that is the name on the form we have to fill in)

after she is finished with IELTS.
