SAman4Aus
I am doing a 3 month contract in Canberra starting mid March. (I live on the Gold Coast). Never been there so have no idea. I will be working in the CBD and need to get a 1 bedroom (I am on my own) furnished apartment. Are there any areas I should be looking at? I don't have a car? Any web site (other than Realestate.com.au) that I can search for a place? I would like be within walking distance to a pub or two (not nightclubs - im too old )
Lyn
If you are not going to have a car - then I suggest you look at furnished apartments around Northbourne Avenue. Middle of town.We stayed in Kingston terrace apartments in Kingston - lovely area - 5 mins walk to Manuka - great food and pubs. But this means you will have to bus it. Do you know exactly where you will be working ? Can try and narrow it down for you.
Kurkprop
Turner, O'Connor, Braddon and Reed are within walking distance to Civic (Canberra's CBD). A short bus ride away are the other inner North suburbs like Ainslie, Downer, Hackett, Watson and Lyneham. You could also consider living across the lake in somewhere like Kingston, which has lots of apartments and a good pub scene as it is also only a short bus ride into town or a quick bike ride Look at allhomes.com.au. There is a rental section. Another place to look at is the ANU's accommodation website - people sometimes advertise furnished places there for visiting academics etc. I hope you will enjoy it in Canberra
africancowgirl
Hi there, I am not in Canberra yet (arriving in May) but the ACT government sent me the following link for recommended accommodation -http://www.canberrafurnished.com.au/guest-information/Others on the forum have also recommended: www.stayz.com.au and the Canberra Motor Village : www.canberravillage.comHope that helps. MrsMupersan
Howzit SAman4Aus! And welcome to beautiful Canberra - you're certainly going to be here for the most spectacular part of the year - autumn is just lovely. Bring your camera! Also, if you're here next weekend, come and join us: https://www.facebook.com/events/513763028667537/3 months in Canberra without a car is going to be a bit tough. You might want to consider at least hiring one on weekends so you can get around and about. If you're a cyclist, definitely bring your bike! Walking from New Acton to Bunda St is certainly do-able. But then Braddon is even closer and there are heaps of great restaurants and pubs around both areas. Kingston would still be my first choice and you could cycle or bus it across the lake to work. Kingston Terrace apartments are really good. But have a look on www.allhomes.com.au - that's where the majority of rentals in Canberra are advertised.Send me a PM if you want to get together when you're here - hubby and I don't have kids so free to head to restaurants and pubs. :-)
SAman4Aus
Thanks Mrs Mupersan.......I will PM you.Why do you prefer Kingston? Remember I am on my own and would prefer to be able to walk to a supermarket or mall or places to have a drink after work. And yes I will certainly hire a car for weekends once I find my feet. I have heard that Braddon is not a good area, is this true?
MrsMupersan
I spent my first 18 months living in Barton which is just next to Kingston. We used to walk to both Kingston & Manuka for the fantastic restaurants and pubs in the area. Telopea Park is also a great spot to take a book and lie in the shade on a sweltering Canberra day. Kingston is close to Lake Burley Griffin for walks - spectacular in autumn! Bus Depot markets on Sundays, Glassworks & Brodburger (a Canberra institute!) - all within easy walking distance. The ACT Rugby Union Club (the RUC) is within walking distance of Kingston for watching rugby on the big screen or to take a bus directly to a Brumbies game. I also like the pubs in Kingston - Belgian Beer Cafe and the Kingo (Kingston Hotel - great for a feed on a Sunday arvo), The Realm & Easts for a bit of a classier hangout. I find the whole area around Civic, Braddon and Northbourne Ave a little dodgy - especially after dark. Possibly too close to the uni for my liking - the whole vibe just isn't my thing anymore. http://www.brodburger.com.au/http://www.obdm.com.au/http://www.actruc.com.au/contact.htmhttp://belgiumbeercanberra.com.au/http://kingstonpub.com.au/http://www.hotelrealm.com.au/http://www.easthotel.com.au/Hope this helps. BTW - Kingston Terrace apartments are between the Kingo and the Kingston shops with all the restaurants, pubs and an IGA and bottle-o. Then just down the road in Manuka there's more restaurants and pubs as well as a really nice Coles which has just been refurbished. We now live up in the north in Amaroo and absolutely hate it! Can't wait for our lease to be up so we can move back to the Kingston area. I'm already looking on AllHomes! :-)

OubaasDik
Could try these people for a place to stay http://www.canberrafurnished.com.au/I have dealt with them, and didn't like them, but they were the cheapest I could find.
