Intro... Checking out Brisbane

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this forum, my name is John.

My family and I are looking at the possibility of relocating to Brisbane. I've had a job interview which would come with a 457 visa for work in Brisbane. I'm in IT and am a software (SAP ABAP) developer. The interview went really positively, but I'm still awaiting an offer. At this stage I am investigating all the details of living in Aus, and in Brisbane.

Looking forward to picking your brains and getting this relocation process going. It is seriously stressful!

I've already found some extremely helpful advice on this website, and will probably get loads more, I'm sure. Many thanks to you all, in advance!

Regards,

John

Welcome John.

IT is suffering a downturn in Brisbane at the moment due to a new state govt sacking a lot of IT contractors. Hopefully your speciality is protecting you from that somewhat.

Good luck with the job. Have you decided what your first question about Brisbane will be? :grads:

Hi Fish,

Many thanks for your welcome! I hope the IT down turn isn't what is delaying the offer coming from there!!

I've already posted a few questions about Brisbane in the other forums and have stacks more!

Thanks man!

John

Hey, thanks Fish! I can't find anything in the forums about surfski-ing or canoeing in Brisbane. Is there a surfski club and/or canoe club In Brisbane?

Lake Cootharaba

Very shallow lake north of Brisbane great for canoeing.

Also leads into the "everglades"...very popular canoe place.

Brisbane - Moreton Bay

Canoeing around the diving wrecks at Tangalooma off Brisbane is a lovely spot.

Redcliffe, Brisbane

You could consider living in the Brisbane suburb of Redcliffe. It has flat bayside beaches with plenty of water craft taking advantage of the flatter water.

While it is not an island it is connected south to the city by some crazy long bridges :)

So Fish, is there anything you do NOT know about Qld? :)

I did grow up here so I can't claim too much credit for just remembering places I have been  ... though remembering things is getting harder these days :)

...and some of the ugliest houses i have ever seen

Is this post on the right thread Emille? I'm trying to fit it into the OP's question about canoeing around Brisbane but I'm lost  Is it just a random comment about Brisbane having some ugly houses or something ? ...you sure know how to be cryptic

Oh redcliffe...because the last photos were of Maroochy river and countryside you had me searching the countryside photos for particularly ugly houses :)

As a far outer suburb Redcliffe, like most outer suburbs, was considered a low socio-economic area similar to Wynnum/Redlands or Logan. Over the years, because of it's location, Redcliffe has developed into a lovely family area but it still has a mixed demographic with some poor housing stock.. As you say it is nowhere near all and the benefit is the nice houses near the beach can be had at far better prices than imagined.

My friends 2 years ago rented a lovely 4 bedroom house with a gate directly onto the beach for $500. You could sit down for dinner and watch the dolphins swim amongst the people doing water sports.

Every time we visit our friends Redcliffe looks better and better...it really is coming on in leaps and bounds and the foreshore is just great with the paddling pools, parks, bike tracks etc with cafes across the road.

It can often depend which pocket of the peninsula you happen to be in. It can vary a lot.

You could see a house like this:

And then one like this :)
