Architect starting the process...

Hi guys,

I joined some time ago, and have been vicariously involved in many of the posts... this is my first, big steps!

I completed my masters degree in architecture in 2009 and have been working for three years in East London as an architect. My plan has always been to work abroad, but post varsity my student loan was sobering reality. I have qualified as a professional architect and am now shifting my focus towards working in Sydney.

I have been doing a great deal of research over the past several months, and have already started with the Academic Qualifications Assessment 12 weeks ago. I am exempt from writing the IELTS as my degree was 5 years long, which certainly makes it easier. Currently I am working on a stellar creative portfolio / resume, and once my my degrees are accredited with the AACA, I will start looking for work.

What is the likelihood of me receiving sponsorship? Any tips / comments / help will be greatly appreciated!

Hey Errol357

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on actually taking the first steps. Emigration is a roller coaster ride of note. Can't help much with the sponsorship thing but it may be a good idea to start trolling sites like http://www.seek.com.au/ for work so long. Sponsored jobs are not really advertised but if you send you CV to a couple of the companies listing on seek you may be lucky enough to find one that can sponsor you.

If you have enough points though 65+ and your occupation is on the General Skilled Occupations list you may want to look at going the 189/190 visa subclass route, that way at least you will have PR and not just be there on a temporary visa with no benefits. Whichever way you go, good luck with the process and don't give up whatever happens, the end prise is well worth the paper race.

Hi HEJJ why would he need 65+ points for a PR, I am an architect applying for a PR visa, but my understanding was that you only needed 60 points. Have I missed something?

I think HEOJ was just stating hypothetically, but ja, 60 points is the minimum for both 189 and 190. The higher the points the better always for priority ranking of your application...

Errol 357, just double check the IELTS requirement. I also have an M.Sc degree, and other qualifications (total of 10 years tertiary studies in English) and still had to do IELTS. You can have a Ph.D. and be a professor majoring in English and they will still require you to do IELTS if you are the main applicant...

FEB, from what I can see from Australian Universities is that their student/ career counselling is outstanding and you cannot make a mistake to contact your local university for advise on available courses. Perhaps a post graduate diploma as a refresher? Was your diploma assessed by relevant immigration assessing authority?

Thanx Rhino1. I obtained my Diploma in 1995, and then worked in the field for only 5 years... My career then steered in a completely different direction and at that stage in my life I had no idea I was going to land up in Australia :) We then lived in the UK for 5 years before we came here, I didn't work at all while in the UK as I arrived there with an 8 year old, a 1 year old and I was 8 months pregnant!! My hands were full and I decided not to go back to work. We then decided to immigrate again as the weather in the UK was cold and depressing, so getting a job was pointless... So no I didn't have my diploma assessed by any relevant immigration assessing authority. We came here on a 457 visa using my husbands electrician skills to get sponsorship.

I don't even know if my diploma is worth anything, which is sad... I also live in a rather remote town, so I'm not sure If I can even do what I need to do here??

Errol375, IELTS definitely required. I am an architect with 189 issued earlier this year, and I had to score very high in the IELTS to make enough points.

Hi Gouwgouw,

I am an architect in the early stages of my process of application. I sent my docs to the AACA for assessment. Can you perhaps help me with some information?

1. I want to book my IELTS exam – but I am not sure if I need to do the ‘academic’ or ‘general training’ modules.

2. How long is the IELTS valid for? I read somewhere that it is only valid for 6 months, or am I confusing this with something else?

3. How long did you wait for your positive skills assessment? Did they only send you one document with the ANZSCO code as confirmation?

4. How did they confirm receipt of your documents? Email / post?

5. Any other tips??

Lots of questions.. Hope you can help!

Thanks

In 2008 I did not do the IELTS for my PR - only had to provide a letter from the uni confirming my >=5 year degree was read in english

I have a mate (an architect) who came over about a year ago. He had contacted a few architectural firms direct and was sponsored on a 457. Process was very quick. He is now looking to convert to PR after two years, sponsored by the same firm. No skills assessment, IELTS, nothing - not even medicals. They are required to do medicals, Form 80 and submit academic documentation for PR though. Not expecting any problems.

one has to decide for yourself which visa is best for you. My concern with a 457 is you are dependent on your employer for residency. With a 189 you get permanent residency straight away. I can only comment on my experience but the IELTS score was a crucial part of scoring points. Dave, the general training modules are what you will be doing. The IELTS results need to be done within six months from when you submit your visa application. I can't recall exactly how long I waited for skills assessment but about six to eight weeks. They only sent one doc. I contacted them to confirm receipt, to which they replied.

PM me if you need more info.
