Hi all,

I would like to find out what I would need to do about getting my sons medication when we live in Canberra,

He is on a S6 drug ( Concerta / Ritalin ) for ADD, I have heard that Australia has banned this drug?

Hi ShazPas

My understanding is that these drugs are availible.

RITALIN LA® (Long Acting) (methylphenidate hydrochloride) became available in January 2003, more info @ http://www.pbs.gov.a...83E-3440C-8839F

CONCERTA® (Methylphenidate HCI) became available in February 2004, more info @ http://www.pbs.gov.a...87P-2388Q-2432B

Both drugs are availible on the PBS

In most cases only specialists who are authorised by the State/Teritory may prescribe stimulant medication. Generally, paediatricians and child psychiatrists may prescribe for persons under 18 years of age. For adults, psychiatrists are mainly authorised to prescribe stimulants. In very limited circumstances, a general practitioner may be authorised to prescribe stimulant medication.

You should ensure that when you arrive you have sufficient stock of the drug to enable you to make an appointment as soon as you have your registred with medicare, as you will have to see GP first who will then refer you to a specialist. Be sure to bring your sons medical records.

Please note that I'm an not expert and Google has helped me with most of the information....

Regards

Terence
