LeonF
Following on from my post on Perth numbers I thought I would expand it to some of the other States. I used the 2011 census numbers and extracted the number of South Africans by birth. First of all if you look at Australia there are 145,683 South Africans (0.7% of the population).Broken down by State;NSW - 40246 (0.6%)QLD - 35449 (0.8%)WA - 35328 (1.6%)VIC - 24450 (0.5%)SA - 6208 (0.4%)Broken down by capital cityGreater Sydney - 33651(0.8%)Greater Perth - 30291 (1.8%)Greater Melbourne -21812 (0.5%)Greater Brisbane - 19588 (0.9%)Greater Adelaide - 5267Greater Hobart - 825Canberra - 749Greater Darwin - 467I won't bother with the rest. So NSW has the most South Africans, although WA has the greatest percentage by a long shot, no surprise there.If you break down Greater Perth you get :Mandurah - 2288 (1.5%)Perth NE - 2583 (1.2%)Pertn NW - 13008 (2.7%)Perth SE - 5723 (1.3%)Perth SW - 5640 (1.6%)So this confirms what we know. The South Africans live in the North-western suburbs.It looks as if the migration further north continues.Some selected suburbs.Jindalee - 108 (9.1% South African & 4.2% Afrikaans)Iluka - 343 (7.5% & 2.5%)Burns Beach - 114 (7.1% & 2.6%)Mindarie - 492 (6.6% & 3.3%)Ocean Reef - 414 (5.1% & 1.7%)Darch - 281 (4.6% & 2.7%) , this is obviously the attraction of the local private school.Duncraig - 634 (4.2% & 1.1%)Hillarys - 434 (4.1% & 1%)For Gtr Brisbane the numbers looks as follow:Brisbane W - 3441 (2%)Moreton Bay S - 2587 (1.5%)Brisbane E - 2869 (1.4%)Logan-Beaudesert - 1911 (0.7%)Moreton Bay N - 1091 (0.5%)Some selected suburbs in Brisbane WBellbowrie - 257 (4.7%)Kenmore Hills - 109 (4.3%)Kenmore - 271 (3.2%)For Gtr Sydney the number areEastern suburbs - 6398 (2.6%)North Sydney - 7728 (2.1%)Baulkham Hills - 3168 (1.5%)North Beach - 3017 (1.3%)Central Coast - 1369 (0.4%)Some selected suburbs in EasternDover Heights - 555 (14.1%)Rose Bay - 868 (9.2%)Vaucluse - 563 (4.7%)Some selected suburbs in North SydneySt Ives - 1742 (11.2%)Cherry brook - 565 (3%)It looks as if the South Africans in Sydney are more concentrated. St Ives @ 1742 is the greatest number per suburb and Dover Heights at 14.1% the greatest concentration (in Australia?).Do any of you know of other areas that have greater numbers?
AndreaL
Do you base your statistics on country of birth by sex or country of birth by arrival dates, I'd like to put paid to an urban legend that Mackay region has between 12 000 and 20 000 South Africans....I would think it is more like 1500.And it seems we have 101 here in Moranbah, which is quite a lot as we only have around 7500 permanent residents. LeonF
The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the latest information last week which allows for an more exhaustive search on where the South Africans live. So I have added some more information below to expand on my previous post. The numbers only reflect where people where born and so would exclude people that grew up in South Africa but where born elsewhere. The top 10 ten suburbs in Australia for South Africans by absolute numbers are:1. St Ives,NSW - 17422. Canning Vale, WA - 10673. Dianella, WA - 8694. Rose Bay, NSW - 8665. Vaucluse, NSW - 7436. Caulfield South, Vic - 6947. Castle Hill, NSW - 6558. Berwick, Vic - 6459. Duncraig, WA - 63110.North Lakes, Qld - 588Some of these suburbs are some of the largest in Austalia (Berwick is the second largest and Castle Hill the 6th largest). If you look at the numbers on a percentage basis the picture is a bit different. Note that I have excluded smaller suburbs with less than 300 peopls (else the likes of Spring Mountian,QLD tops the list where 3 of the 6 residents are South African).1. Dover Heights, NSW - 14.1%2. Bronwyn&Co
Duh, I'm feeling a bit doff. Do the % stats mean, that, for eg 12% of St Ives is South African, or does it mean that 12% of the South Africans in total live in St Ives...? I suppose the former. rozellem
Yip, I walked through Dover Hights (in Sydney Eastern suburbs) yesterday and can confirm the 14% figure by all the Joburg English I would randomly hear on the streets. Its a mecca for South African Jews, doubt if you would hear Afrikaans. It is a lovely place but, you would need a number of millions behind you to even get your foot in the door. ps. we were doing our City2Surf dress rehearsal and the route goes right through it. The Melbourne hotspots, Caulfield (north and south) appear to be the same demographic.

LeonF
A happy new year everyoneI thought I would add some stats on how Afrikaans is distributed in Australia. According to the 2011 numbers the following number of people indicated their home language to be Afrikaans.Australia - 35031 or 24% of the RSA immigrant population (of course they don't all come from South Africa so the percentage will be a bit out).NSW - 6229Victoria - 4439QLD - 10216SA - 2079WA - 10929Tas - 359The top ten suburbs in WA are:Canning Vale - 339Dalyellup - 272Mindarie - 242Butler - 187Baldivis - 186Ellenbrook - 186Curambine - 181Clarckson - 167Darch - 167Duncraig - 164Quins Rock - 162.
Gizmo
I am surprised at the numbers - quite frankly I would have thought that the Perth NW suburbs numbers would be far higher. Honestly, it feels more like every third person here is South African.
