Two Worlds - Please Help

Myself

Recommended Posts

Hallo everybody,

It is me again. I would please like a bit of information from someone that can possibly assist me.

I was absolutely hooked on Adelaide for 4 years, just dreaming of immigrating there. All of a sudden I had a big mind change and would rather like to go to Tasmania.

I would love to raise my two sons there, I have a 9 year old and a 7 year old.

Can someone please give me al bit of information on Tasmania,... jobs, education, overall life in Tasmania, Towns.

Please, any information will help a lot :ilikeit:

Thank you

What is it that attracts you to Tasmania, given you appear not to know anything about it? I know a couple of people who lived there and while there are some nice things, it's not 'alive with opportunities'. And yes, it pours down every other day, just like New Zealand

Hallo there,

No I dont know anything about Tas, only that what I have read on the internet. That is why I am asking a bit of information. I like the idea of a laid back lifestyle, quality family life. Outdoor living.

I have done intensive research on Adelaide, and liked what I was reading. There is something that attracts me to Tas, I dont know if it is the beauty or the lifestyle.

Don't really know much about it except that Australian friends of ours went there on holiday in January (hottest month of the year in Australia). While it was 30+ degrees in Melbourne, it was barely 20 in Tasmania. That said there were people swimming in the sea, but her kids remarked - they must be Tasmanians!

Tasmania is great. I lived there for 13 years, but came back to Adelaide simply for family reasons.

My 29 yr old son wants to go back to live in Tasmania where he was born and grew up for the first 11 years and goes back to catch up with old school mates every couple of years.

However, you will be passing up a good spot to live and bring kids up in if you pass the opportunity of not settling in the Adelaide Hills. It's pretty much like Tasmania, only warmer and is on the mainland of Australia with easy driving to Victoria and New South Wales for holidays.

Ultimately, the choice of place to settle is yours, but both are great spots to bring kids up in . . . . . safe, open countryside, good schools, etc.

Thank you so much for the replies, it looks as if Adelaide has more opportunities though.

We also had our Visas approved to go to Adelaide two years ago, then went on the LSD trip- 2 weeks in Adelaide to see where we were going to live, then 1 week in Tassie to visit family.

We landed here, and even though it was freezing, we LOVED the place. The people are MUCH friendlier, they will actually go out of their way to help you. Its easy to meet people, because everybody knows everybody here! Haha..

We have thought of going to Adelaide from here n a few years, but I must say, I am very happy with our choice to come to Tassie first. Moving to another country is a MASSIVE move, and the first few months are super emotional, but I think that Hobart is the best place to get used to the new culture and differences between SA and Oz- there are no pressures from the locals- they know you are a immigrant and are very patient and understanding.

Tasmania is the most family friendly, safe location in Australia I say. Walk down the street and people will smile, you do not get this in main land Australia. It may not be the height if excitement for 18-25 but safe, it is! Friendly, we are! Sounding like YODA now :) When in doubt, if you have the opportunity, rent for 6 months in each location, see for yourself. Life is different in Tas. Very relaxed, very safe. Wouldn't live anywhere else :)

Clare, thanks for the info. We have never considered Tasmania as an option, but there might be an opportunity worth considering. And I must admit that - from what I've read - Tas seems like the place you wouldn't mind growing old in. That said: We love the outdoors and were wondering how much wind does Tasmania get? Where about in Tas are you?

Hi Buzz.

We're in Southern Tassie. Suburb's name in Kingston, about 10km from Hobart CBD. If you love the Outdoors, Tasmania is for you! Best thing is, everything is so close that you can get somewhere stunning in a day trip! Strangely, since bringing my husband here in 2008, I've seen more than I ever seen growing up! He's from PE with family still there, Tasmania is not windy like PE! We have one month in October where there is usually a week or two that's quite blowy.

Outdoors like hiking? Or day trips? Look up Google Images, Hastings Caves, Cradle Mountain, Bay of Fires, Devil's Kitchen, Mt Wellington, Overlander Track, Russell Falls, Tasman Arch, Wine Glass Bay. If 4WDing is your thing, we have that too! Diving? No probs! Wine? Tasmania has some of the best in the world!

The air is clean, so is the water! ;) I've heard nasty things about Adelaide tap water? Probably totally without foundation! ???

Cheers,

Clare

There is a Facebook site for Ex Pats in Tassie too. " South Africans Living in Tasmania" Why not jump on and ask there? I was born here, they chose Tasmania. Kingston / Blackmans Bay seems quite popular for housing for those we know here. We have local rugby teams too! Though rugby is not massively followed in Tas. Not like QLD & NSW.

If hubby could find work in Tassie, I would be there is a flash !! When we lodged our visas we were so keen to move there - we googled and googled - seemed so perfect for us. But we felt it better to go where the job offer came from.

As a matter of interest, and if you don't mind sharing - what do you do for a living ?

And Glenorchy - is that a big town - have you heard of it ?

Havent lived in Tas but have heard not too many opportunities for work unless you are a farmer. Weather is pretty much colder and wetter than rest of Aus, pretty much like New Zealand.

Hi Lyn,

No probs. I am a Home & Investment Lending Manager for ANZ and my husband is a Store Manager for Beaurepaires.

I know some people moan about job opportunities, depends what your line of work is and whether it is that role or any role you are after. I am a firm believer in that fact that if I wanted a job today, I could come home tonight with one. This would be different for specialised roles of course.

What do you both do?

Glenorchy, yes, I know it well. It wouldn't be my choice to live there if I am totally honest. That being said, house prices are more affordable there, perhaps it's a good starting point. Strongly recommend renting before purchasing anywhere. Get to know our beautiful Island before committing to a particular suburb.

Thanks for sharing. My husband is a tradie, we've been running our small business in Canberra for just over three years now.

The reason I asked about Glenorchy is because that is where the ice rink is in Tassie. And that's a biggie in my daughter and my life. Don't mind driving about 30 mins to the rink tho.

I am an old fashioned girl, dream of the farmhouse, rambling roses, chooks and veggie patch. Love the cold and rain. and each time I see Tassie on TV I can see myself living there.

Do you like snow? Have a look at Molesworth and Collinsvale. Very close to the all important ice rink, but worlds away! Beautiful. :)

Thanks again for the info! If we don't get to live in Tas, I will most certainly plan an extended vacation to explore it.
