The company where I work is looking for more C#/.Net developers. There were some interviews today, but the prospective applicants were not very good. At all. Well, the one couldn't even construct a loop. So, the management asked everyone to help source suitable candidates. Here goes:

Location: Perth, NOR.

Duration: Contract for 9 months or so, with possibility of extension.

$60 per hour.

Project is high profile (and will look great on the CV).

Team is top class.

Drinks on Fridays.

Casual wear / nice atmosphere.

Please send me a CV if you are interested, reside in Perth, and may legally take this job.

I know how you feel.

I went to an interview here in SA a while ago where I got asked to deliver proof of my ability to write code (I have about 10 years experience), so I selected to write a recursive function with a query to a database. I figured it'll show understanding as well as be interesting. The interviewer, their programming lead, didn't know what recursion was, nor did he understand the relevance thereof.

NO WAYS?!?!? I'd have walked out of the interview if that is the calibre of individual interviewing me! And to top it off he's potentially going to be your lead?!?!

Irony, I didn't get the position because I didn't have the 'suitable skills and experience', yet they employed a fresh from 'varsity student with no experience. That despite the fact that I have a diploma (Eng. Computer Systems) and plenty of experience in MS SQL/T-SQL (including some in SSIS, SSRS & SSAS/DTS) and just completed my SQL 2008 (including BI) courses at that stage.

I suspect I was either too expensive, or my lack of BEE credentials counted against me. I hope to think it wasn't the latter.

Reality is that you did not get the job because the newbie was significantly cheaper, and having no previous experience, they can mould him into what they want. Employers always want to pay the mininmum, and they want people to grovel. They also want loyalty, so if you are too independant they will not like that because you can move to another job if you don't like their work, and that means that whatever time they have invested in you will be lost, and they will have to start over again. So the best approach to looking for work, is to tell them what they want to hear, that is, that you are willing to follow the herd, like a sheep, and do as you are told.

Just my 5c worth. If I lived in Perth and knew C#, I would be applying, but unfortunatley I live in Brisbane and I know VB.NET, so wrong place wrong time....
