Contract job in Melbourne

Recommended Posts

Hi All

On Monday I had a interview with Telstra, Tuesday they replied and told the agent they want me ASAP. Very good news ! BUT

The contract is only 6 month. (They said it will be extended, BUT not a given)

The job pays VERY well,BUT its something that I have not been very involved. I'm technical/software development and this job is more of a liaison officer between company and vendors. Making sure what the vendor promised is delivered and lots of docs/specs. (Not my thing)

But this is a "foot in the door" and can always move to different comp.

First question.

I here lots op people loses (or is made redundant), so I'm worried that after 6 months I will have to return to SA. Whats the chances of this happening ?

I have a nice permanent job now with reasonable pay, don't want to leave just to return in 6 months and then have to start over.

i'm a IBM Tivoli Netcool specialist and was told by my contract agent that my skills is readily available (not sure if he is just blowing smoke up my OoO )

Any advice would be appreciated.

Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm also in IT and thinking of contracting in Aus, can you give me your agent's details ? Does the agent also operate in Brisbane/Sydney ?

Thanks

I'd think that whatever you do, GO FOR PR ASAP !! I can recommend Letitia da Lima from Visas-R-Us.

Hope it's not 'illegal' to 'promote' a favourite agent on the forum ??

Be careful, to be unemployed, going back and starting over without a guaranteed job is a big risk, if you do not have a PR do not even consider it.

All depends on how seriously you want to leave SA. All I can tell you is that there seems to be a lot of software development positions in Melbourne for people with experience. Having Telstra experience might make it easier to find a job elsewhere. All the best. If you decide to take it, let us know if you need any help in Melbourne.

Hi Chris

Let me start by saying - I see there is someone else in the equation (Natasha) - I dont know if wife, partner, girlfriend and what role she plays in the decision or whether you have kids etc. Therefore comments below are based on principle that you can just up and go and return if worse case scenario happens.

You need to decide what level of risk you are prepared to take and wor on the worst case scenario and decide whether that is acceptable or not.

In other words what is the worst that will happen after 6mnths and what are you prepared to risk:

- They dont renew and you have to go back to S.A.

- They dont renew and there is an opportunity to find work elsewhere in Telstra (Telstra is huge - look at there career/job opportunities)

- They dont renew and depending on the visa you have you find opportunity elsewhere

- ........... other levels of risk

You then need to honestly decide what risk are you prepared to take. So if you are ok with the scenario that after 6mnths you have to go back - then go for it.

Or are you ok with the risk and prepared to take a punt that after 6mnths you may have to go back, but prepared to take teh risk that there maybe opportunity elsewhere in Telstra or another oranisation and you have 6mnths to prove yourself and fine that opportunity - Again will you be ok that it may not work out this way and you may still have to go back, but best case scenario is that you have an opportunity to find something more long term, you will have gained at least 6mntsh of experienceto put on resume for use later when you come out again or you find that alternative optin and you end up staying.

Worse case scenario if the worst happens - what would you have got out of this and again it depends what is in the deal for you:

- what type of visa

- Will they pay relocation costs

- Is it a good salary/package

- ...........

So worse case scenario you have to go back - well guess what, you have:

- 6mnths of work experience in Aus on our resume

- You have a 6mnth LSD trip (could be free if they are paying relocation costs) with opportunity to travel in your own time to see some of the other Australian cities and get a good feel for the place - This is an important factor as many people would like to do this before they come out but cant afford to.

- Is the package good enough that you can save a few Dollars and take abck and with exchange rate it may contribute to paying off a house or clearing loans etc

- If package good enough can you leave some money here for when you do get that opportunity to comeback out and you have a nest egg of Dollars instead of Rands

- You will be able to open bank accounts, get rental history and other things, which will benefit you when you come out again.

These were just some ideas of what you should think about an dnot just the fact that worse case you come out for 6mnths and you go back and you did not get anything out of it - There is opportunity here and even if worse case scenario happens - it would not be a waste, but in your head you need to accept the risk that worse case scenario could happen.

I see where your going with this and do agree, (6 months gain) But I have 23 years experience in Telkom SA and it took very long time for me to get to a good position with enough money.

So 6 months and then coming back is not a option for me. I have a wife (Natasha) and 3 kids.

I will go over alone until I see what the job requirement(prospects) are and then will the family follow. If I decide to take the plunge ;-)

The salary is very good because its a contract job. So saving and "leaving" or bring back some $$$ would be a good idea. A specially if i could get cheap/sharing accommodation.

And free LSD trip ... we have been in Melbourne and would love to settle there. (I will see if they would pay VISA/Flight ticket for me)

Thanks everyone for taking the time to post !

All the best. If you decide to take it, let us know if you need any help in Melbourne

Thanks will do !

Do any of you know if I need a medical for 457 visa on contract work ?

Yes, I think you need a medical - it is about the visa, not the type of work (except certain jobs require a more complete medical)
