We would have loved to come, but our son recently joined a local rugby club and they are having a family BBQ get together on Sunday which we are attending. Hopefully we'll be free for the next one.

Hey Polly, the sun is going to shine on Sunday, I have put in my request! The forecasts are slightly windy, cloudy, but no rain at this stage. So remeber to bring a warm jacket with!

Hi Dorien

You know, I was checking back on previous 'outings' and although we had more people replying to those, it was a miniscule amount compared to the people that actually showed up! So I am going to 'believe' that we will have a good turnout.

As to your question of whether once settled new residents do not feel a need to socialise, yes, I have seen this happen often, however, eventually the do return!

I also sent a request for the rugby club membersto be informed, as well as posting it on 'rainbownation' so hopefully we will have some of their members attending as well.

If we only end up being a smaller group, no problem, we will have an 'intimate' gathering!

Hi Everyone

I am new to the forum. I arrived in Australia in 2006 and had a baby boy at the age of 45 in 2008. But I miss talking to someone from South Africa and gassbagging in Afrikaans. I have family in Cape Town and havent been back since I arrived. I have just read about the picnic on Sunday but wont be able to make it as we visiting my FIL this weekend.

Almost time! Looking forward to a great day out with fellow South-Africans.

You are right, Mara, they all eventually "return". I'm not too worried about the outcome. We had several replies on the Inzalo email we’ve sent out and people from other clubs are also joining in and will bring their friends. I'm actually looking forward to seeing a bunch of new faces. We will have a good time all the same.

Come one Melbourne - ask Mara - it is really an experience having a picnic with the South-Africans.

See you there Mara and all the others…

We expect good weather and no more earthquakes!

Dorien

What a wonderful day we had! A huge thanks from everyone for Dorien who arrived at 8.15am, all the way from Berwick, to ensure that we had space under the 'afdak'! Three cheers for Dorien!

The weather played with, there was much conversation, lots of laughter and many happy faces, thank you all for attending!

For those of you that asked for the 'wonder koek' recipe, I will post it on this thread, tomorrow!

OK folks, roll up, here is the recipe some of you asked for. It is called in Afrikaans "Wonder Koek", don't ask me why, I have no idea, but in English I am sure it is a case of I wonder why I eat so much of it, cake!

Ingredients

250gr butter (1 cup) (do not try to substitute, it must be genuine butter)

250gr sugar (1 cup)

2 eggs

2 packets Marie biscuits broken into small pieces. (place in plastic bag and run rolling pin over them)

250 gr pitted dates

125gr walnuts chopped

1 teaspoon vanilla essence

1 tablespoon cocoa powder

1. Chop up all the dates, and set aside. This can be a big job as most blenders will do nothing to them, they are too tough. If you have one of those square bladed meat choppers that is relatively sharp, I find them to be the best on a timber chopping board.

2. Melt butter and sugar in a large pot, until sugar has completely melted. (pot has to be really large as you are going to add all the ingredients to this mixture eventually)

3. Beat eggs and add slowly to the butter and sugar mixture, stirring furiously! Add egg mixture real slowly, otherwise the eggs will cook and become separate little blobs.

4. Add the dates, cocoa and walnuts, cook until the mixture thickens, add vanilla essence.

5. Add Marie biscuits, mix well.

6. Press into a greased glass dish and place in the fridge to set. Do not use non stick cookware as you will damage it with the knife when you try to cut the set tart.

7. After about an hour, take a sharp knife, lots of muscle power and cut into squares.

Enjoy, it is pretty good!

Hi eveyone,

Thank you for the arrangements Dorien. We didn't meet many new people as one gets so tied up with the few around you! Whichever, it was good and enjoyed the time out.

Strange that it was so cold, and it turned really warm!!!

(Believe it or not, I actually got sunburnt!!!!)

Groete,

Tyrone :)

Hi Everyone!

Thank you SO much for supporting us!

I'm glad you all had a wonderful time... I had a ball! :)

Nans, was great to meet you and Tyrone believe it or not – I also got sunburned…

Will upload some photographs soon…

Mara, thank you for the “wonderkoek†recipe and the taste – it was delicious.

And thank you very much to everyone who assisted in some way or other (Mara for promoting and Neola for organizing).

See you at the next one…

Dorien
