Johan&Karen
Anyone out there looking for work should attend this expo. Last year they were looking for people in the mining and engineering fields. It was not directly linked to my architectural field, but i still went there and met a wonderful lady that has made it possible for me and the family to work in Australia. They even go to pay everything to get me and my family there. You never know...... bienkie
I hope the expo's this year is better than last year's! Friends of mine went to the one in CT and was VERY dissapointed. Seems that it caters mainly for specific sectors. They said that they feel they wasted their money. Maybe people on the forum can comment on their experiences? Rover
I found the Expo to be helpful if you want reading matter and people to chat to regarding the states that are present (not all of them were represented), but in terms of work it was a bit of a dud being in IT. The majority of it was mining and engineering related. It seems like while there are lots of IT work in Aus, people don't easily sponsor IT people anymore (unless VERY specialised with a gazillion years experience in a field that has only existed for two or three years ). Out of all the stands last year only three or four had IT related interests, which was sort of a part of the rest of what they did, only IBM and Woolworths, which is very different in Aus than in SA, had an IT focus. AngelaJ
We went last year, drove from durban to joburg, spend the night in joburg, a waste of our time and money. If you want to go for info then it is great. It is very career specific, my husband is in the motor industry and although it was advertised as being there, everything was geared to the accounting and engineering. We went with the hopes of finding someone who could help us with a job offer, or at least a few interviews Edited January 16, 2009 by mushu
Frank_OZ
Just bought Tickets for the March Expo. Although I am in IT, my partner Leon fits into the Mining and Engineering Field, so we're hoping of finding something for him! For R150 pp I see it as a good opertunity, even if you don't find a sponsor of whatever, you still get to see and hear what Ausie is all about. I mean lets get real, I spend R150 everyday on stuff that I don't even need, speding R150 on a expo that might provide me a fiture in AUS is something I will gladly do... WaltAM
Hi faye,Is there anyway you can give us an idea of what they will be focussing on this year?We are interested in attending, but for all the expenses involved getting there (we are in Cape Town and cannot wait until Sept), it will be a huge disappointment if at least my field (IT - I am a business analyst) is not covered! Thanks

In both the IT representation were a lot lower than suggested and expected. Rather visit the following sites, you'll get a much better idea of the IT job market: http://www.seek.com.au/ http://www.careerone.com.au/ http://mycareer.com.au/ http://au.hudson.com/There's always a lot of removal companies there to assist with information on the actual relocation of your house content, which is informative.I would however highly recommend the Expo for anybody in mining, engineering and other careers related to those fields. In my opinion travelling from Cape Town to JHB just to attend the event would not be worth it for IT, unless you can schedule it with other business in Gauteng. Nes
We went last year and also found no help in IT or teaching but I enjoyed the talks they did about the states. Will there be different fields at the show this year? Is it worth going again ?
Barries
You wil never satisfy everybody, the expo was very "onprofessioneel" and disorganised (in my opinion), but yet I got a job through it. Thus anything is beter than sitting at home and waiting for the best.Bottom line, get you As$ over there and put yourself in the market, you are not guarateed a job or a good feed, but at least you have tried.Komaan, jy sal nooit weet nie.En nee, ek werk nie vir die mense nie.My persoonlike opinie, as jy in die volgende sektore werk gaan jy sukkel:ITBankingInvestment BankingAdvertisingMenslike hulbronne.

With an attitude like that you'll definitely get ahead! And even if you don't land a job or even land an interview, you still feel as though you're "doing something" towards the whole process (eat, sleep, live, dream Oz-visa!).Good luck at the expo... AllisonW
We went last year because we live in randburg and it was in midrand so was no real stress to go but found it worthless. Unless, as others have said you are working in some select fields that will be able to assist you. We were not looking for sponorship and got no new info but did enjoy the video that the lady from victoria did for us and her talking on living there. So go if you are in JHB and it is not a huge hassle but DONT bother if it is going to cost you flights etc.Just my 2c worth! I learnt way more on the forum and always get a response from real people who have real experiences without the queues.Al

OfftoOz
I see theres one in November here in JHB. Any point in going in terms of opportunities in IT Management? (Have Visa already and am applying on Seek everyday).
rozellem
I see theres one in November here in JHB. Any point in going in terms of opportunities in IT Management? (Have Visa already and am applying on Seek everyday). For IT, I would say no. Things move really fast in IT employment, you have to be here. Some people with brilliant, specialist skills in demand get IT employment via SEEK and do skype interviews. The rest have to meet face to face with recruiters and employers. But, I mean, if you aren't doing anything on the day and you are in the area, by all means go. Just dont put all your eggs in that basket. Take the leap and come over to Aus. OfftoOz
Thanks rozellem,Agree that my chances are probably much higher by being there but very scary to take the leap with two very small children without any income to rely on.Have only started looking over the last three weeks. We are stamping in early December so might be able to 'see' some companies personally. My company actually has offices in Oz and I have spoken to people there but they don't have any opportunities at the moment but like I said, early days at the moment House goes on the market next week!
