From Bloemfontein to Adelaide

Hi Everyone,

Well, as you can see, we are from Bloemfontein (Freestate, South Africa - for those that don't know) and we REALLY want to go to Adelaide, South Australia. I have looked at numerous websites and Adelaide looks absolutely fabulous. ;):whome:

We are new (and believe me, brand new) at this thing :whome: . We decided at the end of last year that we are going to take the leap and it has been a bit of a scary ride so far. We have 2 children (our daughter is 11 and our son 6), we are obviously doing this thing for them, and somewhat for us (piece of mind and all that). My husband is a Plumber and we qualify on points for the skilled visa. We really do want permanent residence so it is going to take about 18 months apparently.

We are now busy with Johnny's Vetassess - he has been in business for himself for over 10 years now, so the requirements are different for someone who can just give proof of employment, but we are about half way with that - and is it EXPENSIVE! $600 for the initial documentation then another approx $1700 to go and do the test. Never mind the fact that he has to do it in Cape Town (flight tickets and accommodation).

At least he doesn't need that high a grading on the english test - he is a real boertjie hey but atleast he can speak and write english (although the spelling is sometimes a nightmare). Hopefully he won't struggle too much with that.

Anyways, I just wanted to say high to everyone. I read some of the postings yesterday (while the administrator was checking my stuffs) and found some very interesting subjects and information, now I'm glad I can start posting too.

Bye the way, my cousin told me of this wonderful website - they will be in Brisbane, hopefully within 6 months. :whome:

Hi Michelle

Welcome to the forum, you are sure to be able to find the answers to any questions you may have with the search function but anything in particular you have in mind- just shout.

Is your cousin on the forum too?

At least you will have a friendly place to visit in Brisbane!

Good luck with all of your plans

Adelaide is a pretty relaxed place. Its pace of life is that of a big country town, according to other Australians from elsewhere in the country, but has been home to me for most of my life, now.

With the worrying financial situation, South Australia is changing its criteria for migrating to this State, so I'd be getting my trades qualifications and everything else done as quickly as I can, in order to lodge a permanent visa application some time in the near future.

Good luck to you.

Hopefully, no matter what the financial status, we'll still need plumbers, so I reckon you stand a good chance of being successful.

Hi

Thank you everyone for your kind words. Me and my husband talked last night and I told him about everyone's posts and what I have read previously. We might actually now be changing our strategy because off the current situation and might try to get a sponsored visa, but I will post that query on of the other discussions.

Thanks again,

Michelle

We arrived in Adelaide 7 weeks ago and it IS Australia's best kept secret. It's wonderful here. The right amount of city, beach, suburbs and hills. Good luck with your application.

Hi Michelle

I would suggest that you stay with your original idea of applying for a PR visa. If you can arrive in Adelaide/Australia on a PR visa, that's first prize, especially in view of the current worldwide financial crisis.

Adelaide is one of the smaller capital cities, but is a "lekker plek" to live in.

Enjoy!

Hi there,

I will be landing in Adelaide in the last week in Feb, coming from Durban. I popped across the week before Christmas and was improessed by the city!

I am fortunate enough to have secured a job, so that will make the whole move easier.

Any advice before I leave Durban, and when I get there?

Hi Angela

Let us know if you need help with anything, before or after you arrive in the metropolis of Adelaide. ;)

Enjoy!
