Would love to know the whole story...Hi TrudieHere is some history about the West Gate BridgeDuring construciton in the 70's sections of the bridge collapsed and this is the Westgate Bridge Memorial WebsiteI could not find anything specific about the pillars and assume that is part of the design structure that keeps the bridge up.All girder type bridges seem to have high pillars with metal ropes - look at the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco. This is what seems to keep everything in balance and hold the bridge up - A Laymans explanation RgdsMatmanp.s. While looking at the wiki of the West gate Bridge I then found this bizarre, yet interesting website - List of disasters in Australia by death toll Edited December 9, 2008 by matman
Olie
Would also love to hear the story about the pillars ... Here's a full on picture of the pillars of the other bridge - not nearly as impressive as the Westgate Bridge ...Olie
polly
Here we go. Found ithttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bolte_BridgeBolte BridgeThe Bolte Bridge is a large twin Cantilever bridge in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It spans the Yarra River and Victoria Harbour in the Docklands precinct to the west of the Melbourne CBD. It forms part of the CityLink system of tollroads that connects the Tullamarine Freeway from the northern suburbs with the West Gate Freeway and the Domain and Burnley tunnels to the Monash Freeway and the south eastern suburbs....It is one of the largest balanced cantilever cast in situ box girder bridges in Australia. The superstructure is built as two independent bridges of variable depth, prestressed concrete box girders, separated by a 1.15 m clear gap between the structures....
