We are living in the UK and every now and then I just get 'gatvol' and think about going home. Tonight I watched this programme on BBC2 by Louis Theroux (he is British) about the crime in Johannesburg and how private security companies take the law into their own hands.
I only saw a little bit of it at the end, but they were interviewing two criminals who were proudly telling him how they would torture and kill people for money (bragging about putting children in ovens and cutting wives throats to get their victims to give them money). One was just released from two years in prison for murdering two traffic cops (yes only two years) and his last highjacking was the night before in Benoni.
I lived in Johannesburg until 2006 and I know about these things and I read the news but seeing him talk about it so casually just chilled me to the bone. It saddens me deeply that our beautiful country is ruined and broken and will never be whole again. I realize now I can never go back.
