Hi everyone,

My name is Dean, I'm 33 years old and my rose tinted glasses are officially off. My wife Barbara and I have decided that enough is enough. Coming from Durban, our first choice would probably be Brisbane or the Gold Coast and from what I have read, they sound great. I’ve been searching for all the negatives on Brisbane and the Gold Coast as well, and so far I feel that they are all minor irritations compared to how we are forced to live here.

Our main reason (but definitely not the only one) for wanting to leave is the violent crime. We would like to have a child in a couple of years and cannot see ourselves raising a child under these conditions.

I am in IT. I have an A+, MCSE 2000 & NT4, CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) and also a 3 year international diploma in Marketing Management (IMM) which has been confirmed by VETASSESS. I have 8 years experience in IT. Apparently I will scrape through on the points system if I get at least 7 out of 9 for my IELTS test. My aunt who lives in Maclagan which is about 2 hours from Brisbane has also agreed to sponsor me so I can get additional points.

I have started gathering all the necessary documents and I'm writing my IELTS on the 30th August.

I have found the information on this site invaluable and I'd like to thank all the contributors.

Dean & Barbs

Welcome to the Forum, we have learnt so much from all the advice people happily share. Our Visa was approved last week and house sold on the weekend - so heading off to Melbourne Aug / September. Good luck with all your things.

Hi Jax and Jens,

I really envy you, so lucky your house is sold. I have been waiting for 2 months but not even an offer. I see you are from Durban. which estate agent sold for you? I am expecting to get my visa within a month. I have applied for a parent visa but am still young enough to work (nursing) and am hoping to be in Perth by the end of October.

I wish you well and happy landings in Melbourne

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

I'm just counting down the 6 weeks now to write my IELTS, and to get above 7 on each section...... make or break time!

Are there any kite surfers that are already in Brisbane? Any information would be greatly appreciated on beaches & kiting spots.
