CA & Pharmacist Cape Town

Hi Everybody

We have started actively reading the forum the last week. I am a Chartered Accountant, my wife is a pharmacist and we have two small children.

We like the outdoors, I like spearfishing and of course my wife likes shopping (just joking B) ). I am a born Namibian and stayed in Joburg

for nine years and have been in Cape Town for five years. This forum has already contributed substantially in making the unknown known.

We started exploring recently and have decided to proceed with the application for a 175 on my credentials.

I would like to get this in place and then just go over to activate it and have it available.

I am a partner in an unbelievable medium size audit practice. I do not want to let my partners down, and for

that reason we will probably only be able to go in about four years, once everything is in place here.

We started out last week feeling when we go it will definately be Brisbane - based on the fact that we did not really want to stay in a big city

like Sydney and there seems to be a lot of South Africans in Brisbane. As I start looking at the weather (don't like the Durban humidity!) and

also the job opportunities for CA's seems better in Perth (?) I am starting to doubt a bit, but at least we have time to sort this out.

It seems the first step is the IELTS, which it seems the next date in Cape Town is only in August 2008. That should be fine as we have time.

I will probably start posting some questions to other CA's under different sections relating to registrations, skills test etc.

Hopefully we can also be of assitance to others.

Glad to be part of this forum!

Hi Capetownca,

Welcome to the forum. My son is also going to be a CA. He is doing his Honours year this year, finished his BComm Accounting last year in SA. I think he will do well here is Australia.

You don't have to do Honours to be a CA in Australia, but we wanted him to do it and felt it would be in his benefit to do it. He flew to Brisbane last night to sit his first 5 hour test, so he was feeling a bit anxious.

Anything we can help with feel free to ask, you seem a very relaxed person from reading your post and it is nice that you have plenty of time to get your visa done.

bye for now Jill

Hi Capetownca,

Welcome to the Forum, just keep in mind that the IELTS is only valid for 2 years once issued, so keep this in mind with your 4 year plan.

Enjoy the forum and goodluck with all the info and excitement.

Hi Standed

Thanks for that info. So even if I get the Visa and go over within a year to validate it and come back,

I would still have to write it again in two years time?

Hi Tsunabi

That sounds great, good luck!

I actually have two questions at this stage:

1. Did you register with AICA and did you do the two subjects?

2. As far as the IELTS is concerned is the General training option sufficient?

1) Unless you are interested in doing tax(as in advice/specialist) over in OZ you dont need those additional 2 subjects any more. And since we are registered with SAICA (one of the few countries that is recognised by AICA) all you need is a letter of good standing from SAICA, two reference letters from other SAICA members(seems to be more for a caracter reference purpose) and one letter stating what responsibilities you had as part of your job(this would be your boss - does not have to be a CA)

2) As far as IELTS go, I am writing the general one :ilikeit: . I may be wrong with this but I dont think(hope not :ilikeit: ) that I need to write the other academic test. Will let you know if I am wrong on this(hubby is double checking)

I have been dealing with this person when I have any questions. Maybe she can help if there is more stuff you want to know regarding this whole thing. I am in the process of getting all those letters.

If you get the Visa and go over within a year to validate it and come back, should not have a problem!

Keep on asking and you will receive....

Enjoy!

Hi Ursula & Albert

Groete

Hi CAPETOWNCA,

And welcome to the forum! I trust that it will answer many of your questions long before other sites or organisations are able to do so.

I have a very good friend pharmacist, who also started looking at Aus as a destination in Jan of this year, just before we did. You can PM me if you ever would like your wife to chat with my friend.

Otherwise, your plan should work out time wise. Even if you get your visa issued in next year, say, you should still have the 4-5 years after that, having made an activation entry (read - holiday!), before you have to migrate for good. So, one can do the longer term plan.

Cheers, and all of the best!

Hi CAPETOWNCA,

Ook oor my toekoms as blanke man sou ek dalk nie altyd in so n goeie werks posisie kon bly nie.Ander rede is oor my dogtertjie se veiligheid en my vrou.

Waar is noord, oos of suid nie.

Haar aksent het so verander. Haar nog nooit so gelukig gesien nie.Sy se gister vir my uit die bloute.PAPPA I AM A REDNECK so i am not going back 2 SA.Ek het amper aan my koffie verstuk.

Glo my jul doen die regte ding teen langtermyn.

Groete Albert.

Hi CTCA

My wife and I are both CA's. We have our application in and are on the hurry up and wait train!! We are going to Perth (hopefully by Aug/Sep). I am not sure about jobs in practice as I am looking in commerce, but there seem to be a lot of jobs available in Perth (though generally will only entertain applications once PR visa is in hand!!)

We did the academic IELTS (although I am not sure that we needed to?)

Good luck. Enjoy the ride!!

Hi CTCA,

My line of profession as well. Looking at Perth though.

Just a quick question - why wait? In 4 years you could re-establish a new business?

Be careful where your loyality lies. Your family & yourself first.

Painting a cover with moral duties could hurt you first.

Would not the proper integrity be too tell your partners and not just hold "the ticket to ride"

Nothing personel - just an observation

Thanks Fern, my partners know already. The problem is I feel

responsible to assist them with the process of finding somebody

to replace me, which is not going to happen overnight. It is more

difficult getting a partner into the business which is like a marriage

as oppose to just finding somebody else that can do the job.

Hi CTCA,

My husband is also a CA and there is a support group on the forum for you guys, answers all your questions! I'm not sure how to get you there, but if you type this into search, you should find it! Sorry, I'm not so good as this...

Accountants assessments, "Support Group" or http://www.saaustralia.org/index.php?showtopic=3268

Good luck with Unisa!

Hi CTCA,

Good luck I hope it happens for you quicker than in 4 years. By then the R is not going to be worth too much hey! Maybe you can get some out in the meantime.

But sincerely re-think it I am sure they must feel some responsibility to you and let you go after some resonable attempt. Advertise in Zim.

Hi CTCA

I dont want to alarm you in any way - but your wife will have to sit some exams here before she can work as a pharmacist - I am not sure what they are but I have two clients whose wives are pharmacists and they had to sit exams in their first year even though they had been doing it for years.. Once they did the exams though, they were snapped up for good salaries!!!

So try and see if anyone on the forum knows anymore or if you want PM me and I can ask them (actually three of them not two - I just remembered another one)
