  1. Hi, I hope you don't mind an Aussie posting in this forum, but I have a house I have rented for the last 13yrs to 7 successive South African Families (including 2 brothers). The house is in Hallett Cove SA, where you'll find lots of other South Africans and a lifestyle everyone seems to enjoy. So details about the house: 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 toilet. 2 bedrooms with built in cupboards. Space for parking 2 cars off street. It is on a sloping block facing the sea, and has sea "glimpses". It has efficient heating & cooling. I have the electricity and gas accounts in my name, which makes it easier for new arrivals who don't know which company to go with. It is within 200m of a primary to year 12 school. It is within 300m of a train station to the city. It is withing 500m of medium sized shopping centre. The house is mine, and I will handle everything, no agents. I keep the rent below the market rate, and try to keep it the same until you move out, ie, current tenants have had a fixed rent for 2.5yrs. The address is 12 Manunda Way Hallett Cove, South Australia. The reason I prefer (strongly) to rent to South Africans are: Most of you have owned houses before and know how/why to look after a house. You have all been grateful for me letting you rent the house. I do not care if you don't have a rental history I can check, I understand. I do not care if you don't have a job, I've seen everyone get jobs really quick, I understand. I understand that your furniture is coming soon in a container, so I lend everyone some camping chairs, cooking gear, and a 12V car fridge to get you by. I don't mind if you're family comes to visit, I had up to 11 people in the house at once!! Everyone has paid the rent and looked after the house, that's all I ask. And it's great for me to see families arrive, with a tenseness in their face and manner, and gradually, over about 3 months, relax, then 12 months later be absolutely settled. The house is available from 28 April 2016, hopefully I find someone soon, otherwise I'll have to rent to Aussie's!! I can provide contact details of previous tenants if you would like to check that I am for real (this is the exact opposite of what happens normally). If you would like to call me: 0437 383 998 I will some photos of the house this weekend, when I take some fresh ones, as I've recently done alot of work in the backyard, including an outdoor fireplace. Regards, Paul Whittenbury e: paul.whittenbury@bigpond.com.au

    Schools and Zoning

Hi everyone Our 190 visas to South Australia were approved last week (yay), and things have moved very quickly- we are flying on the 2nd of November, in the hopes of trying to find a rental in a good school zone before December (we'll be staying in an airbnb until the end of Nov) Our twins will be starting reception year in Adelaide in January so we are hoping to get a nice rental for a good school zone, although we have no idea what area we are going to choose yet. I understand that the government schools are strictly zoned, and proof of residence is required upon enrollment. But what happens if you move out of the zone a year later, do you have to continually prove that you are in the school zone? With such a big move and all the changes, we would like the kids to at least have the stability of sticking to 1 school, even if we have to commute to get them there from another suburb. We don't have much time to secure a rental before the schools close, so another relocation next year is inevitable Thanks so much- looking forward to your insights

    IT Jobs in Adelaide

I am in need of some job contacts in the Adelaide area and maybe some tips on catching the attention of some potential employers. I'm coming over on a 489 and have a wide variety of skills. Over the years I worked as a Unix System administrator, Network administrator, Assistant IT Manager and Project Manager before I started working for myself. I completed a MCSE on NT4 many years ago. I am Molex certified as well. My most recent skills involve Wireless point to point links and AP's. I have a lot of experience with the Ubiquiti and Tenda wireless products. I also have many years of CCTV experience on IP and Analogue systems with remote monitoring setups. I don't really know if these are sought after skills in Australia maybe someone can shed some light on this. Thanks KenMich
  7. Hi all, House to rent to new arrivals or settled South Africans. 3 Bedroom 1 bathroom house in Hallett Cove, South Australia. (between Christie beach and Brighton beach) Moving out mid July 2016. 6 blocks from shopping center, about 3 blocks from school and some glimpses of the sea. Great landlord! Please let us know if interested. Please see this post for full details.
  8. I thought I should create a new topic... My husband and I are coming for our first LSD trip in March. We need to accept state sponsorship so Adelaide our only option. Surprisingly, it wasn't one of our options at first, but the more research we have done, the more it is becoming our first choice :-). We are hoping to see about 3 schools (Brighton, Hallett Cove & ???) - our daughter is 4 years old, explore the various areas, perhaps meet with a head hunting agency, etc. Suggestions for our LSD trip would be very welcome. We envisage ourselves actually moving in about 3 years time for family reasons . It would be great to have a cup of coffee with someone who can share their experience with us.

    Chronicles of the Adelady

And so I start recording my thoughts and feelings regarding the big move. Please excuse the partial paranoia in my journal- in real life hide these concerns quite well. We were granted our 489 visa on the 12th of October 2015 and booked our flights shortly after. D-Day is 4 April 2015. 84 Sleepies. At this point my biggest concern is our initial accommodation. A fellow Facebook forumite PMed my partner to offer us accommodation after hearing that we were in need of accommodation. She sent us pictures, described the layout of her house and provided us with her address. Everything seems legit. After months of perusing the internet for medium term accommodation we couldn't find an offer that beats hers and we've decided to take her up on her offer. Now, after letting her know our arrival date, my brain starts playing tricks on me. How reliable is a forumite on Facebook? What if forumite decides not to pitch up at airport to collect us? What if furumite is a murderer? What if forumite is mentally unstable? (If this said FB forumite is on this forum, i mean no disrespect) I think this thought pattern partly stems from my intense need to be self sufficient and my incapability to believe that others have my interests at heart. I have tried to reach out forumite on FB but have had no response to my message (I fear she does not check her "other" inbox or is she avoiding me??) In my heart i truly want to believe that her offer came at the perfect time as we are meant to move to Australia and the universe wants to make it easy for us. Another concern, money, eish... What the hell happened to the rand. At the start of our application we were paying around R9 per AUS and now its around R11? I always thought of our immigration as reaching for better opportunities and not as "fleeing" from Africa. With rand what it is I feel a sense of urgency to jump ship before we sink with it. We have a good lump sum saved up for Straya and we have chosen to adopt a frugal life style on the other side but I fear "struggle". I would like to work 38 hours a week, I would like to work one job, I would like to get my hair done and not have to resort to cutting it myself. Ah, that felt good, just getting it all out there...
  10. Hi all. So after all the tests have been taken, forms have been filled, qualifications assessed, money paid, patience tried, tears cried....we are down to 21 days until we begin the biggest most exciting adventure of our lives thus far...16 June 2016. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our journey this far, this forum has carried us through a very emotional and challenging time and we appreciate all of your advice and support. Although I feel we are well researched and well prepared, one cannot help but be rattled by the fact that you are entering into a whole new unknown world, a new lifestyle, new culture, where things will never again be the same....I guess one can liken it to the experience of having your first child, no matter how well you prepare or how others try and advise you, you have to just do it and learn on your feet, everyone's experience is different and unique. And so we're jumping in feet first, 3 kids in tow, no jobs, little money and a whole lot of FAITH! Would love to hear from others on the forum making the move to Adelaide soon?
  11. Hello, Has anyone lived or looked at living in Marino, Adelaide and how did you find it? We are looking at possibly staying in that area with our two boys, one who is starting reception year at school next year. So we would also have to consider schools. Would we be eligible for schools in neighboring suburbs, like Hallet Cove? would love to hear what your opinion is of the area. Thank you!

    Introduction

Hi All, 189 Visa in hand, validated in June 15. Tickets booked to Adelaide for December 16 and an exciting year ahead to wrap up life in Central Africa, it's time to move on. Interested in running, boating and the odd fishing line!
  13. We are looking at shipping companies, and managed to shortlist it down to a few based on people's experiences and opinions on this site. We were almost settled on CargoPak when I read a few threads on how dreadful they were for Adelaide, specifically when sharing a container. We will not be sharing a container, and the thread is now quite a few years old, so possibly things have changed? I was hoping for some up-to-date honest opinions from people who have landed in Adelaide within the last year or 2, and if possible approximations of how long it took. (I believe it takes longer to Adelaide than the bigger cities). Thanks so much! Only 309 more sleeps!! Ros
  14. Hi Everyone We are planning to arrive end of April in Adelaide. Hopefully hubby will then have organized us a rental as he will be going a month in advance . Hopefully also a job. My daughter is in grade 7 in South Africa, but I have read that year 7 is already high school? Is this correct? I was looking at Heathfield and Blackwood High schools any opinions? Does anyone have a daughter about the same age that have migrated that my daughter can correspond with. She is really not happy about the move. Sorry for the thousand questions. My sons are grade 2 and grade 1 will they be okay if they only start the second term? Regards, Melanie

    On our way to Adelaide

Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself, I'm a Business Analyst and am a mom to 3 children, age 12, 8 and 7. My husband is an IT Manager. We decided 2 years ago to start the process and eventually lodged the application in September 2015. We got confirmation that our visa was granted on the 20th Jan. We applied for a state sponsorship so we are going to Adelaide and the plan is to land around April 2016. I have trolled thru most of the post and the advice going thru the process have been a great help. We joined a get together in Pretoria last year and that helped a lot to hear from other people and their experiences. Now we have to start packing up and make all the arrangements. I must honestly say .. I haven't been this scared in a long time. Must say moving my oldest child seems to be the most problematic as she has lots of friends here and doesn't want to move and leave them. My husband's family is also against the move so that makes everything a lot more difficult. So now for the next step... a big leap of faith. Regards, Melanie
  17. Hi So today I received my invitation to apply for my 189 VISA, really stoked! My wife and I are going to take an LSD trip to Australia in August this year, and are checking out 4 cities: Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. We would like to check out the suburbs while we are in Adelaide, can anyone recommend the best areas to check out for a family of 4? Thanks a lot!
  18. Hi guys I am looking for a room to rent for a couple. This will be a short term rental (about three months). Just till we are on our feet. What is life like in Adelaide?

Hi Guys Since we got sponsorship for South Australia under the state sponsorship scheme, we will be spending two years in Adelaide before moving on the other cities (if we even decide to move) I was wondering if anyone could give me tips or share their story of Adelaide with me. We are a couple aged 29 and 35, working in IT and retail respectively. Currently we are living in Bloemfontein so we are used to the small city life. What are the people like there, and is there enough to keep one entertained?
  20. We have landed in Adelaide. ROUGH night with baby on RSA time (and me and the wife). Lots of admin to do today. Will fill in the details when I have time to write. Hope to get some second hand car shopping in before I have to start on Monday at the job.
  21. Hi all, If you are coming out soon and need a place to rent. We have one until February. We are in Port Noarlunga. Its close to the beach and shopping centre. Has 3 bedrooms and a study. If you are interested, pm me. Price is $285 per week. It is not fully furnished but we have a few things we can help with. Also if you dont want to make a commitment to a 6 or 12 month rental, this would be perfect for you. Otherwise you could renew in February.

    3 weeks in Adelaide

G’day all We have been in Adelaide for three weeks and here’s a rundown of events as they may or may not have happened. Knowing we have a kid that is an absolute terror at night (I don’t think I’ve slept for 7 and a half months), we decided to dose him and dose him good! We called the doc and he prescribed an antihistamine to give to him to help him sleep. The trip from Johannesburg to Sydney was a breeze! He slept better than he ever slept, only waking to eat and then back to bed. Bassinets in the airplane are a miracle and I would recommend them if you have a small baby. The flight from Sydney to Adelaide, however was less than fun, with me mostly standing in the isle rocking from side to side to get the little sh!t, O, sorry, I mean darling to not scream his head off. Thank heavens he had grommets inserted in RSA before we flew, so we didn’t have to deal with pressure changes too. We were lucky enough for my boss to pick us up in his car at the airport, since he has a baby seat. Not sure how I thought we would get to the apartment in a taxi… Thank heavens cars here are American sized so our three suitcases totalling 70kg all fit in. The first night we were awake at 2am making lists of things that need to happen and by 4 we were all awake drinking coffee and snacking, things got better the following nights with us mostly being back in step with the time zone. Who the hell has half a time zone?! Seven and a half hours difference?! Really?! What’s up with that? I digress… SOOOOOOO much admin! The first day was spent getting everything for the little man, to make our lives easier. Groceries, Medicare and mobile phones sorted. Second night a little bit better, the little man has a cold. So much goo. Next day, I ventured out to find a car. Walking down North main road is quite a stretch if you’re looking at cars from all the dealers. It’s almost like Main reef road in Johannesburg. Found a Mitsubishi Magna that didn’t look too bad for our budget. It’s a huge car, V6, 3.5l engine. For someone who owned a 1.6l Polo, this is just ridiculous, but hey, seemed a good deal for the price. Car registered and licence converted, check. GPS and baby car seat, check! Night 3: we explore the hospital in Modbury as the little man has been running a fever for almost two days. Thanks to medicare, we pay: nada Had a daytrip to Gleneng beach on the Sunday as well as looking at houses. How ridiculous is this 15 min open house thing?! Monday: Work starts with a bang and I think my boss is insane… He is one of those big idea people who thinks anything is possible, while I see all the nitty gritty things that have to happen to make his big picture a reality. I’m working my @ss off! Literally! Lost a couple of kgs with the walking everywhere and catching the bus, etc, not that I couldn’t afford to lose some. Finally, the wife has seen a rental see likes and we apply. We are approved just in the nick of time before our two weeks apartment rental runs out. Now for the big shopping: furniture. If I knew what it was going to cost to buy furniture here, I would have spent the container cost to get our crappy RSA furniture here. Unbelievable! Between not qualifying for credit and half of our money still being in RSA, it was a juggle and a half to get everything paid via NAB debit card, Standard Bank debit card, FNB credit card. Then the shuffling around of money back in RSA to cover all the debt we just made. But at least we have a bed to sleep on and a fridge to store some milk in. Finally, after more than an hour on the phone to centrelink, I was able to get a reference number to do an online application for child tax benefits. More admin to follow with private medicare, super, internet, telephone and foxtel, etc, etc, etc. When will it stop? At least we get stuff done. If we had tried to do all of this in RSA it would take months. People ask me if we are happy in Australia and I really don’t know what to say? It’s been 3 weeks people, filled with admin up to whazoo! I’ll let you know when things settle down and I have a chance to breath. At least things work in this country and I’m not fearing for my life everyday. PS. It’s really hard with the little sh1t, damn, I mean little dear being awake 7 times a night and knowing there is absolutely no support if you just have to take a break from him. That’s what I miss.

  24. Hi Adelaidians When we land in Adelaide in Sept, we want to try and buy a car as soon as possible to at least have one to do the stuff that will just be easier with a car (also easier with a baby). Is there an area of Adelaide that is known for used car dealerships? Like I know in Johannesburg, you just drive down Main Reef Road and you will see stacks of used car dealerships. Is there such an area in Adelaide? Also, what do you need to buy cash. Do you need to have a SA drivers license or will my RSA license do? Do you need to take out insurance before you drive of the lot, the way I had to in the USA? Thanks Erik
