I am a 49 year old principal of a primary school in the RSA. I am also a registered Educational Psychologist. Where can I look for a sponser because my age counts against me. Both my children will immigrate as well (they are both qualified teachers).

Die beste wat jy kan doen is om aansoek te doen by skole. Onderwysers is groot in aanvraag hier. Miskien kan hulle jou sponsor, of jy kan in 'n regional area gaan werk, waar dit uit die stad uit is, en in 'n klein dorpie. As jy bereid is om dit te doen, sal jy miskien 'n 457 kan kry, maar ek is nie doodseker nie. Hier is 'n paar onderwysers io die forum wat jou miskien beter kan help.

I would also suggest you approach privae schools - the state schools generally don't sponsor people.

I am sure you will find a sponsor - ideally best if you can get one before your 50th birthday, be sure to try for an ENS (Employer Nominated Sponsored) visa (rather than 457) as it is a permanent visa - but if 457 is offered take it and try for PR (Permanent Residency) later. Also, your children should press ahead with their own individual applications ASAP, as once they are settled there it will strengthen your case for PR.

Here’s some more info as well as some links that you may find useful.

This link will go to the DECS (Department of Education and Children’s Services) in South Australia’s website (sub-page) that deals with vacancies on managerial level at schools as well as support services.

You mentioned that you are a school Psychologist as well. Here in South Oz we refer to them as “Guidance Officers”. There’s not many position in that respect that I’m aware of, but there may be some in country locations. However, we have a lot of school-based Councillor positions in South Oz, and it may be worth your while to check this option out as well.

I give some information in respect of leadership positions first, as there is a chance that you may find something there, as DECS started to recruit overseas for leadership positions.

Many of the positions that you see advertised for Principal, Deputy Principal and Assistant Principal are in South Oz country locations, and that especially is where the South Oz government is prepared to look to candidates from overseas to fill the positions.

I have not read it outright in DECS statements, but it is implied that if DECS is willing to employ people from overseas, they will also be willing to sponsor you and to assist with the appropriate visa.

There is also the option to come and start here as a classroom teacher, but classroom teachers are not recruited or sponsored from overseas, you have to go through the registration, application process like any South Oz teacher. Hi Dax

Weereens baie dankie vir al die inligting wat jy aangestuur het. Dit is vir my ongelooflik dat iemand soveel moeite doen sonder dat ons persoonlik ontmoet het. Ek is besig om deur al jou "links" te werk om op hoogte te kom van die Australiese onderwysstelsel. Op watter form doen mens aansoek vir 'n pos? Indien jy van 'n pos te hore kom waar ek moontlik 'n "sponsorship" as onderwyser of opvoedkundige sielkundige kan kry moet jy asb laat weet - dit sal alles baie vergemaklik. Beide my kinders (22 en 26 jaar) is ook gekwalifiseerde onderwysers en stel ook belang om saam te immigreer - hulle wil egter nie indien ek nie kan immigreer nie.

“n Mens doen nie in Suid Oz aansoek vir leiers-poste op 'n bepaalde vorm nie.

‘n Mens se aansoek kom basies neer op wat 'n mens kan noem 'n soort "opstel" van 4 - 5 bladsye bladsye waarin jy op grond van jou ondervinding jouself ast'ware in die pos waarvoor jy aansoek doen projekteer.

Wanneer 'n pos geadverteer word word daar ook 'n "job & person specification" vir die pos beskikbaar gestel. Elke pos het 'n kontak-persoon wat 'n mens dan kontak en hulle stuur vir jou die "specifications" vir die pos en dan begin jy aansoek doen.

Gee my so "n paar dae kans dan kyk wat ek vir jou kan doen met;

* Ek sal DECS bel en hoor wat is die prosedure met ouens soos jy presies.

* Ek sal "n paar voorbeelde van Person/Job Specification kry en dit op jou oorspronklike thread pos

* Ek sal ook voorbeelde probeer kry van "aansoek opstelle”|' sodat jy kan sien wat ek daarmee bedoel.

Ek sal die bogenoemde inligting ophierdie thread pos.

Sal jy en jou kinders bereid wees om in die landelike gebiede poste te aanvaar? Baie mense hou nie daarvan om buite die stede skool te hou nie, maar dis makliker om hier in Suid-oz geholpe te raak as 'n mens bereid is om aanvanklik in een een van die plattelandse stede/dorpe te gaan skoolhou. DECS sukkel dikwels om poste in plattelandse areas gevul te kry. Daar is ook sekere aansporings pakette vir mense wat bereid is om vir 'n paar jaar 'n landelike post te aanvaar.

Hi Louis,

Inligting wat ek sover kon kry is die volgende:

Ek kon sover net ‘n junior konsultant gekontak kry.

Jy mag slegs vir skoolhoof posisies aansoek doen, niks laer in rang nie, en jy mag aansoek doen vir enige skoolhoof-pos in Suid Australie wat inpas by jou kwalifijasies/ondervinding. (P01 en P02 is jou kleiner skole terwyl P04 tot P06 die groter skole is.)

Jy moet die “Job& Person Specifications” verkry van die Distrikskantoor wat dit adverteer, en in jou aansoek-opstel moetr die person specification weerspieel. Die paneel sal wil sien hoe “projekteer” jy jouself in die posisie.

Dit wil voorkom asof DECS ‘n video konferensie of ‘n telefoniese onderhoud met jou sal voer indien jy gekontak sal work vir ‘n onderhoud.

Jy kan “online” aansoek doen, ,maar jy sal ook ‘n getekende harde kopie van jou aansoek moet aanstuur.

Ek het hierdie inligting verkry van een van di egewone personeel konsultante. Hy beveel egter aan dat jy in verbinding tree met ‘n senior personeel konsultant by Tel. No.: (08) 8226 1590, 9:00vm – 5:00nm kantoor ure hier in Suid Australia.

Dit sal moontlik beter wees indien jy DECS Recruiting per e-pos kontak by

decs.recruitment@sagov.sa.gov.au

Hier sal jy veral inligtig kry oor sponsorships, of hulp met visas. Dit sal beter wees as jy hulle self kontak en spesifieke vrae vra, jy sal die beste weet wat jy wil uitvind, bv. Sponsored visas, wat jou posisie as aansoeker is terwyl jy yuit die aard van die saak nie op hoogte is van Suid Australiese beleide, sisteme ens.

Ek kan nie dit waarborg nie, maar ek vermoed dat indien jy suksesvol is met ‘n aansoek in ‘n landelike area, dan mag DECS jou dalk help met verhuisongs koste.

Die persoon met wie ek gepraat het kon my nie spesifieke inligting gee nie aangesien van die meer senior konsultante oorsese aansoeke hanteer, en nie een van hulle beskikbaar was tydens my oproep nie.

Jou kinders sal eers geholpe kan raak met poste wanneer hulle eers hier is en gerigestreer is en ‘n aktiverings aansoek be DECS gemaak het. Hulle kan natuurlik met die proses begin terwyl hulle in RSA vir hulle visas wag. (Ek het myne destyds so ge-“dovetail” dat ek klaar hier geregistreer was met ‘n aktiverings aansoek en al, met die gevolg dat ek basies vir poste kon begin soek het pas nadat ek van die vliegtuig afgeklim het.)

Indien jou kinders ook aanvanklik in die landeklike areas wil begin skoolhou behoort hulle nie juis te sukkel vir poste nie.

Die poste waarvoor jy op hierdie stadium aansoek mag doen is om te begin gedurende Januarie 2008, dus as jy suksesvol is, sal jy in gedagte moet hou dat vandat jy hehoor het jy het ‘n pos, sal dinge VINNIG moet beweeg, want alle poste wat tans geadverteer word is vir Januarie 2008.

(Meeste mense hier is nie baie geneig om hulle opstelle te "deel" nie, om verkeie redes. Daar behoort egter iewers voorbeelde beskikbaar te wees vir mense wat idees soek hoe om te werk te gaan.)

Die 'opstelle' is wat die woord se, 'n tipe opstel of applikasie brief waarin jy jou soort van in die pos "ingiet". Die paneel wil sien wat is jou ondervinding en kennis, en in jou applijkasie brief moet jy aan hulle demonstreer hoe jy die pos al aanvat met verwysing na die items op die "person specification."

Hier is 'n voorbeeld van 'n 2 bladsy "opstel" Hou egter in gedagte dat aansoek vir prinsipaal posisies sowat 5 bladsye behoort te beslaan.

Hierdie voorbeeld was vir 'n aansoek vir 'n E-Learning Coordinator vir 'n skool distrik, maar dit behoort jou 'n idee te gee.

Steps in addressing Selection Criteria

1. Create a new document

Include a header or title that includes your name, the job title and position number, and a brief title indicating the purpose of the document. Suitable titles include: Statement of Claims Against the Selection Criteria, Selection Criteria Statement, Selection Criteria Summary, or Summary Addressing Selection Criteria.

2. Use each of the selection criteria as headings

Enter each selection criterion as a separate heading in the new document, leaving space after heading to address that selection criterion.

3. Prove your ability to meet each criterion

(this is time consuming and requires thought!).

In addressing each criterion, summarise the way in which your skills, qualifications, experience and personal attributes are relevant for that particular criterion.

Make sure you understand the key phrases and addressing these in your application (eg. 'Experience in','Knowledge of'). Often there are subtle differences in meaning that can be crucial to selection.

Make sure you understand the differences in key roles or functions described. For example, the roles of managing, leading, supervising, organising, and administering are often confused or articulated poorly. Understanding of the subtle differences must be indicated when you address those criteria.

Demonstrate skills and abilities being sought and providing concrete examples and descriptions of these skills and abilities. Common areas include contributing to the work group, interacting with people and managing your own performance.

Don't make unsupported claims or sales pitches about your skills based on personal pinion alone. For example, "I have well developed presentation and liaison skills". You should select and include evidence from your employment history or education to support any assertions of competence. For example, "my excellent management ability is demonstrated by...". The best examples illustrate the complexity and demands of the tasks.

Use direct, active verbs, and using verbs which indicate exactly what your contribution was.

Address all parts of the selection criteria.

Be selective and appropriate in your use of dot points rather than long paragraphs of text. Demonstrate your writing skills in this document.

Avoid words and phrases which reduce your credibility (eg some, a little, limited).

Do

Be concise.

- Organise your application.

- Give relevant personal details.

- Comment on the extent to which your claims match the selection criteria giving concrete examples.

- Format your application neatly.

- Check for spelling and grammatical errors.

- Submit your application on time or seek a time extension with good reason.

- Include a covering letter and resume with your statement addressing the selection criteria.

Don't

- Give great detail about duties performed many years ago that are not relevant to the current position.

- Use poor photocopies of old or general applications.

"n Goeie voorbeeld van hoe mense mekaar help kom daar uit jou geweste in Suid Wes afrika.

Doer in die 70's op 'n keer keer ek terug Johannesburg toe na 'n weermag stint op Oshakati. Ek besluit om tyd te spaar en om terug JHB toe te hike. (Of dis hoe my gedagtes geloop het.)

Ek staat toe vir omtrent 'n halwe dag buite Grootfontein en toe kom daar 'n jong Suid-Wester wat my 'n lift gee tot in Windhoek waar sy ouers woon. (Op Okahandja stop ons eers om sy meisie op te laai.)

In Windhoek aangekom word ek saamgeneen na sy ouerhuis toe, daar kry ek aandete n later toe gaan sien die hele gesin my af op Windhoek Stasie. Dit was nou vir jou Suid Wes gasvryheid op sy beste!

Dis van daai dag af dat ek vas glo dat alle Suid Westers loop op water!
