Quarantine for our 'babies'

Have any of you had experience with Kookaburra Kennels in Centurion or heard anything about them.

It is either them or Keringa Kennels in Kempton Park.

My uncle's chihuahua stayed in the Kempton kennels and they had no problems. They drove through from Pta every second day to visit the dog and take it treats. Don't know anything about the Centurion kennel though.

Keringa are brilliant - my pets stay there when we're away and they will do their quarantine there when we go to Aus. There are loads of thank you letters, cards and photos from people all ove rthe wolrd on display in the reception area and the staff are really great people!

Thanks girls, just trying to see where they should go, as their quotes are more or less the same. Kookaburra is a smaller facility and they have better chance of getting personalised attention.

Other thing, someone in Pretoria would be able to visit them for me, just to make sure their ok and to put my mind at ease.

Cindylou, are you close to Keringa kennels? Just wondered, cause I would really appreciate it if someone could just pop in now and then to see how they are. And to put my mind at ease and just to also take some photos for me of them in quarantine.

Anybody able and willing?

My kinders is alles vir my.

Ek dink darem my twee jonges sal aanpas en hulle gate uit geniet, miskien omdat hulle nog so jonk is, who knows?

Cindylou - if you register with photobucket.com and upload your photos there you are able to post them as I have done above. All you do is to then copy the %7Boption%7D url, the bottom one, into your post, and viola!

This is an issue that has bugged us for years now. We were first going to immigrate 12 years ago but decided not to as we did not want our dog to have to go through quaranteen. The dog is now 14 yrs old and we have decided to look at it again. Problem is though that I am now 5 points short due to my age and the dog is still going strong. Our eldest kid is now 16 and the other is 9 and things are much harder now so my advice is dont put of the move just for your pets. If you think they cant make the 7 months then do it if nott then find them a home but dont not go because of them.

It remains a personal (and very difficult & traumatic) choice whether to take or not to take your pets. It's one of those things that can really break you down and you doubt your decision to relocate. Whichever choice you end up making, it is not an easy one. Good luck to everyone with an extended animal family still having to go through it.

Dedrei, ek is seker jou "kinders" gaan dit maak en baie gelukkig wees in Aus! Ek was nie emosioneel sterk genoeg om dieselfde te doen nie en ek mis my diere vreeslik baie!

Dit is so 20km hier van ons af. Was nog nooit self daar nie, so weet nie hoe dit lyk nie, maar kan altyd een of ander tyd 'n draai daar gaan maak as ek kans kry. Het net nou kuiermense, so ek moet ry waar hulle wil kyk..... ;)

  • 5 months later...

Hi Dedrei

Please could you share what the costs were for each animal , was it cheaper because they are together ?

Any other posts from anyone else who has done this excersise recently specificly looking at the costs incl. kenneling either side, the flights , paperwork, innoculations etc

thanks

Hi _0

If you send an email to Keringa with the details of your pets and where you are going in Aus they will send a quote with all their costs, as well as an indication of the current AUD costs on the other side. It does work out cheaper if your animals share accommodation and also the charge for smaller animals (like my daxies) is less. They'll also be able to give you advice with regards to microchip costs and the timing of the rabies vaccination.

good luck!

Hi Barnone

Wel for my two beagles weight at about 13kg each the total bill for the two of them in Keringa was R27000 (including their flights to Sydney which is based on their weight). Then the Australian quarantine is about $4000. Then there is the flight to us in Cairns, another $670 for both.

So after converting it all back to Rands it comes to about R50 000.:angry: But seeing them after 7 months, priceless ;) I would do this any time again if we to ever move some where else again, as they are part of our family and are our babies.:angry:

And as everybody knows by now, they are home in 8 weeks. :ilikeit::o CAN'T WAIT!!!

Your Beagles are just beautiful!

We're pretty fortunate that our kitty will now only have to spend 30 days in quarantine as we're sending her direct from Abu Dhabi. Which ultimately means its going to cost us far less. We're just waiting for flight costs now, but I think I should put her on diet first. This cat weighs nearly 6kgs.... and she has a small frame.....

thanks Dedrei

I am not sure I am able to justify that cost for my "landmine layer" ;) but glad I have the correct figures to work with anyway.

Another "isssue" seems to be that a number of rental properties do not permit pets, has anyone else had a problem with landlord/rental agents on this point ?
