2OZweGO
If you don't know yet, there will be another Oz Expo during March and April bringing loads of employers with plenty of jobs that will help you start your new life in Oz. Johannesburg event will be held at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand from 29-30 MarchCape Town, at the Southern Sun Cape Sun Hotel from 5-6 AprilFor more info see www.expo-australia.com.I think that more oppertunities will be available this year because of last year’s positive experience, (the organisers underestimated the HUGE response and amount of visitors).See you all there.JacquesS

I think it will be great, but would also like to know if anybody has any good/bad expieriences when it comes the expo. We live in Durban so we will fly up on the Sunday, as my wife writes the IELTS test on Saturday.Anyway i am sure it wont do any harm in going, look forward to it.Thanks

Dreams
Is it necessary to book tickets before hand? Can I not buy tickets that morning or do they allow a limited number of people in?
catherineg
I went to the last one. You can pay on the day but if you have a ticket you skip the queue. Only advice - get there early and expect to stand in LONG queues. Wear comfortable shoes and don't bring the kids. They get tired and bored. Also bring something to eat and drink as the food there is expensive and crap. Although the people I spoke to at the expo loved my CV and said they would have no problem placing me I have heard nearly nothing since. I am IT and apparently in demand. They made job offers to people on the spot who were in a medical, engineering or specialist field.
Nats123
Hi Godan,Although we pre-booked tickets - tickets are on sales on the day as well. The only real plus point is that you skip the queques! So why not book?Nats Edited February 4, 2008 by Nats123

My wife is a Chartered Accountant and she was a bit disappointed with the financial sector’s representation at the expo (it was surprising as Oz has a skill shortage in this sector). Those she did see did not really give any response, except from Hays. The personnel from Hays Recruiting were friendly and did reply within +-3 weeks as they promised. Expect long queues at their stall. I will definitely advice speaking to these guys. The sectors that were mainly represented were Engineering, Construction and medical (nurses). I actually got an interview at the Expo at an Engineering/Construction company (Laing’O Rourke with HQ in WA) and 2 weeks after the Expo received an informal job offer. I, however, declined as we are waiting for our PR Visa. The company requested that I keep them updated of my plans. They even made an effort to make it possible to join their Queensland branch. In short, not all industries are represented, but hopefully this year it might be as they experienced our eagerness last year.

Jordy
We went last year and something happened that has stuck in my mind - we were in the long, long queue, and a real, genuine Australian walked up to us (it was the first time we had ever seen one in real life) and he saw we had our one year old daughter with us. He said, "Come with me please" and walked us to the very front of the queue to a seperate till for parents with children. We couldnt believe something like that happens. When my wife was 8 months preganant we stood in the queue at UIF for nearly two hours, the South African officials didnt give a damn. I know it seems silly but it meant so much to us. Anton welgemoed
Hi You allI was disappointed with the previous expo held at Gallagher. The opportunities were limited to medical, mining and engineering jobs. The entrance was not cheap and my wife and i expected a lot more. The only usefull time we spent there was at the ANZ bank presentation. We want to join Westpac bank and they did not even give a presentation.A big fuss was made about the expo beforehand but it turned out to be small and not worth the money spent.I would like to hear other opinions on this matter.CheersAnton
Traveller
Also just booked my tickets for the Cape Town one!I've been to quite a few seminars on various topics and I'm aways amazed how different people can have different experiences at the same event - so I'm going along with no expectations (except perhaps to hear/see a few things that may give me ideas) and an open mind.If I learn one thing new or even feel closer to the idea then it would be worth the experience alone.See you all there

zoot
Hi You allI was disappointed with the previous expo held at Gallagher. The opportunities were limited to medical, mining and engineering jobs. The entrance was not cheap and my wife and i expected a lot more. The only usefull time we spent there was at the ANZ bank presentation. We want to join Westpac bank and they did not even give a presentation.A big fuss was made about the expo beforehand but it turned out to be small and not worth the money spent.I would like to hear other opinions on this matter.CheersAntonI agree with Anton I found the whole expo very badly organised, I understand that they didnt anticipate the number of people that turned up but they didnt even make a plan to overcome this e.g. put info leaflets outside their stall. They stuck to their original plan, putting all info inside the stall which meant with queues 3 people deep around the entire stall and there are only 2 representatives on, getting to speak to anyone was impossible. The expo focused mainly on the mining and engineering sectors and whilst there were a couple of more generic agencies their approach was drop your CV or fill in a form and we will call you. One agency called me twice at home whilst I was at work and despite being given my work number and promising to call they never did (I also couldnt get hold of them on the number they had given). I finally got an e-mail address off the web and their attitude was contact us when you are in Australia - given that this was an exhibition in South Africa that was a pretty stupid response. I have already said I wont bother again this year. My suggestion, they publish a list of the different companies that say they will be exhibiting. See which companies are in your field and send your CV off to them. Waiting in long queues to get in, waiting in queues to speak to a consultant (if you were lucky) and paying for the priviledge is to me a complete waste of time and money. You time and money would be better spent researching suitable companies and contacting them directly rather than relying on opportunities at the expo. SueB
Last year the expo had a list of companies with stalls on their website (can't remember webaddress), so check that maybe before you go. Otherwise I would also suggest making sure your resume is in "Aussie" format. That's my 2c

Business cards would be a good idea, if you've got them. The main thing that they want to see is whether you have the 'right' professional skills match......you might want to have a look at your CV and put the really nice bits up front and in bold....worked for me! GavinK
I booked for the Cape Town one - i am hoping that maybe i could get a job offer and go over on a 457 visa before my PR visa comes through. That would be the ideal thing for us right now - we'll see what happens.Oh - i am going to take through a few copies of my cv, my positive skills assessment letter, and i was thinking of taking a copy of my cv on a memory stick too.
