Pine and Riana Pienaar
Like all kids I collected a bit of everything - stamps, frogs, coins, spiders, marbles (mostly won from others), pencils, match boxes, etc.Now over time I have started chaging my hoarding habit - to more expensive things that make a noise when you press a button and mostly can be used for practical purposes. As mentioned in one of my previous postings our house has been sold and we are moving this weekend. In the process I am now filtering everything I gathered in a lifetime. I am baing brave and getting rid of everything that is not going along to OZ - we are packing all in boxes (nicely labelled and indexed - courtesy of Riana) and squatting in my parent's house till the big move. They kindly volunteered to move down to their house in JBay till we move - wonder why .I donated my stamp collection to the society in Pta - they have a movement to get youth involved. Now I got the the coins. I dont have many - only a hnd full or two (and a couple of notes). The question is what to do and what not. Some of what I have is SA money from the 1940's onward, some is SA R2, R5 notes you odnt get any longer, there is a set of 10c, 20c of every year I ever found. The rest is really the leftover change brought home after every trip my grandma had or I ever had in my work career. I has not been so many trips but over time it builds up and even if you just have a couple of notes and loose couns from each country you visited it is a whole bunch. I feel a strange sentiment about these and dont particularly want to let go.What can I do, can I take them, what are the requirements? Has anyone done it? polly
You should be able to take them. I think it might be a good idea. Especially if you have kids. It will be great for show-'n-tell at school and something to refer back to.
g26130
Hi Pine,No restrictions. I brought over the old European coins, Francs, Deutsch Marks, Guilders. No one asked any questions. I framed them once I got over here.Cheers,G
Mara
There is no problem in taking them, especially as a collection....so go and pack them now! Perhaps when you get here you can buy a few of those box type frames and either stick or pin the money inside and hang them up as a decoration, imagine the memories you will have every time you look at them....as for the conversations that they will start with friends visiting! Pine and Riana Pienaar
At this stage my coins and notes are loose in Fizzy tablet hoders. Anything I need to do to get it in a more formalised collection or can I take it as is?Should I declare it or something - afraid of establishing focus on it. Mara
Take it as it is, just pack it. Make sure you pack and seal it in a box perhaps, or the 'packers' may take a shine to it!
Almost there
How weird - I have a little tin in my bag this morning of my coins over the years that I am going to try & see if any are worth anything (some are 1940's) - I sat sorting them out last night in fact, I have kept a few for myself but might be worth checking - I know there is a little shop in Sandton City that specializes in 'rare' coins etc and there is an antique shop in Pretoria too that I have seen with a huge collection of coins. If I find any good sites, I will PM you.
