Hi everyone

I have been applying for a lot teaching positions and I have really received valuable information from schools regarding improving my cv and cover letter, so I want to share it with you, so that you will be able to write an excellent cv and cover letter before applying for teaching positions.

Here is a guide from the Education dept of WA regarding writing a cv and cover letter. Other states might also have these available.

Regarding your cover letter

The schools receive about 200 applications, so your application needs to stand out. Here are a few tips to make your cover letter stand out.

  • Make your cover letter competitive.
  • Don't make your cover letter too brief
  • Include a lot of detail in your cover letter
  • You are encouraged to address the 3 domains from the Australian professional standards for teachers.
  • Enhance your cover letter by addressing the school context specifically.
  • Have a look at the advertisement. The schools mention important detail in their advertisements. make sure you address these detail in you cover letter.
  • Proof to the school that you have experience in the field that they are seeking, prove to them that you are the best candidate for the job.
  • Don't be shy in your cover letter, this is the first part of your interview, what you say in your cover letter will get or not get you that interview.

That is interesting, it makes you think with 200 applications for a teaching position there is little if any shortage of teachers in Australia. You may have to consider a different career with those odds...

I'm definitely not changing my career because there are 200 other applicants.

I'm a very positive person, so I believe the right job is out there for me. Everytime I apply, I use the opportunity to learn and to approve myself and my application.

Also, just to add, I have secured an interview for when we arrive in January. I was invited for an interview last week, spoke to the school and they suggested an interview after we've landed so that they can meet me in person, rather than over skype. I am not putting my hope in this, I am still sending out more applications, but atleast I've managed to secure an interview.. Even if there was 200 other applicants.

Hey thanks for sharing. I think the basic principles are relevant to any industry. There are a large number of applications for every job advertised and the more competitive your cover letter is the better. Most recruiters won't even give the CV a second look if they don't like the cover letter.

200 is a number, perhaps 20% of those would crack the criteria of cover letter acceptance, so valid point to give the cover letter special attention. So the odds should get better ......in your favour

Thank you for sharing this RikaMarie. I agree with HEOJJ these principles can be applied across various disciplines and are useful to many of us on this journey.
