ggd
Hi there all - new to this very informative forum - my question is - are there any folk out there who have or are in the process of applying for a SIR visa for South Australia. We are contemplating whether we should submit the sponsorship request - one day we are looking north UK and one day south OZ - so undecided - anyhow - my husband is in the financial services industry and I am just a little concerned as to job opportunities etc. We know Adelaide is not exactly the "finance cap" of Oz but the lifestyle sounds laid back and relaxed and after living in the Middle East - Dubai - for the last four years one certainly yearns for some tranquility and normality. Would be interested to hear from anyone and also in what occupation field they are in - also whether anybody has started or bought a business in Adelaide and their experiences. Many thanks.GG. Annette
I'll do a quick one, because I'm off to bed in a mo:We have an SIR visa from South Australia. We arrived in Adelaide in January after 7 years in the UK. My husband is an architect. We love it here - vastly superior lifestyle to the UK and at least the sun shines during winter - so no SAD! My hubbie had absolutely no problem finding a job - the contruction industry is very healthy here and that impacts positively on a lot of areas. I am looking for a job at the moment, but as I have the classic problem of having stayed at home to raise the children, am now stuck with little experience and vastly overqualified ... oh well, something will come along! There seems to be a lot of jobs in the Advertiser in financial services sector here. Because the states are so large and the country so vast, each state seems to have a bit of it's own economy and thus its own financial sector as well. Oh, and BTW Adelaide seems to be home to quite a few national headquarters because of the cost-effectiveness of running them from here and the competitiveness of the state economy. Have a look at Adelaidebrits as well - I know there are quite a few people on there in the financial service industry and a couple who have started their own businesses - although not as many (they're probably too busy building their business to be bothered with internet forums! )
Pippa
Dear GG,My husband and I planned to go the skilled migration (136) route, but he is an attorney and his skills will only be positively assessed once he is admitted as a solicitor. He is currently studying through the University of New England in Armidale, NSW to be admitted as a solicitor and if all goes well, he will be admitted early next year.I am a marketing specialist and only get 50 points for my occupation. We've recently heard of the SIR through South Australia and it might be an easier and quicker route to Oz. I've sent all my documents to VETASSESS for their assessment and after I receive a positive skill assessment (hopefully) and passing the IELTS (I'm really worried about this...) we may apply for SIR through South Australia. We still don't know if South Australia will approve our application, but it is worth a try... I suggest you look as SEEK's website to test the market. Why don't you write to a few recruitment agencies to get their opinion? You can also visit Wagenet to look at the average salaries per occupation per region. I wish you the best of luck with your decision. It is not an easy one to make!Have a great day!Pippa
ggd
Thank you to both Pippa and Annette for your information. We have had my husband's AIM assessement done and also the IELTS so are basically ready to go - will certainly refer to the Advertiser. Guess another way to solve the dilema is to do the visit - did do Sydney and Gold Coast a few years ago but it is obviously very different down south.GG Edited June 20, 2006 by ggd
