What to do with my cats if we leave before them

katmessenger

Question

Hi there

I was hoping someone had some suggestions. I have been offered a job in Canberra and I am likely to start in August. However our two cats will only be able to leave towards the end of November. We will be in the process of selling our house and belongings and moving our lives and even if my husband stays behind for a while they will still be left with not much more than a bed in the house which can be very stressful for the cats. Putting them into quarantine for two or more months wont be the solution as we wont be able to afford that as well as getting out cats to AUZ.

Does anyone have any helpful ideas on how we can make this work?

Our cat had to stay behind much longer than expected due to COVID. We used Dawsons Lodge in JHB which was very reasonable. Their facilities were amazing with inside and outside areas for each cat.

Ah amazing thank you. What was the cost to keep them in the facilities? And what are do you now live in Canberra? What is it like? Any info we might need/want to know. Also what did you ship over? Did you find it cheaper to just replace stuff? Thanks :)

We are currently in Melbourne - I am currently studying. The cost to keep the cat at Dawsons lodge was just over R1k a month, and you supplied the food. I cannot recommend their facilities enough - you can see they were designed and maintained by people who love animals. She finally got to us this Sunday, so we are very happy to have our cat back.

We shipped 4 boxes - sentimental items like photo albums and things that are not easy to replace such as 1st edition books. We did not have much in SA as we had been preparing for this for around 4 years so lived a minimalist lifestyle and saved around 70% of what we made, so for us shipping our average things made no sense. I guess if you have a R100k loungesuite that would be something hard to replace, but we have found pricing here is not bad at all even with my wife and I still earning ZAR.
