Visas in - now what!

Recommended Posts

We just received our 190 visas for nsw. So much quicker than we thought so now it's all systems go.

We will probably start in Parramatta and want to ask for advice about where to stay until we have a permanent address. If you don't have mates/family, surely a bnb is out the question? Is airbnb a good alternative? Rates are ZAR30K for the month we may need it.

Wish us luck.

We are off to Geelong in Vic, but have booked an apartment for a week off Bookin.com and will try find a rental during that first week.

Good luck with the new adventure

You mentioned the VISA came much quicker than expected, may I ask how many weeks/days it was from VISA lodging to grant?

@Witsie, it may seem insignificant but it literally was 1 day less than the minimum turnaround time which is 5 mths. We were told 5-8 months. The whole process, actually, has been quick - 14 mths.

We booked an airbnb for the first 10 days and used that time to find a rental. In the end we could only move into the rental 4 days later than the end of our airbnb arrangement but luckily they were not booked for the next 4 days so we just extended it. It wasn't cheap but no accommodation in Sydney is cheap! R30k per month is $750 per week which is pretty good depending on what you get for it.

We also stayed in airbnb for 2 weeks (in Melbourne) and the price was roughly the same. We started by booking for 1 week, and decided that we'd scout suburbs, and then go and airbnb in one of the suburbs we liked for a couple weeks thereafter, while looking for an apartment.

In reality, it was a bit overwhelming, so we booked another week in the same area (CBD) and found a place to rent.

So, in hindsight, I'd have booked 2-3 weeks in advance, and if we hadn't found anything by then, moved out to the 'burbs to a much cheaper airbnb (although still more expensive than a rental).
