Of course, our job offer is a permanent post

It’s not whether the JOB is permanent that is the deciding factor, it’s whether the VISA is permanent. A 457 is treated differently for loan applications. From the banks point of view a 457 application could be a farm worker from Fiji or an IT professional from Canada. All they consider/care about is the risk of a default on the loan because your sponsoring company no longer needs your services and you leave on short notice.

Also BOQ do not work with brokers. They only look at direct applications. We are wth them.

Brilliant! What do you think of them?

We love the personal relationship of being able to deal directly with the branch manager. BOQ run a franchise type model where each branch manager owns his/her branch. Our manager knows exactly who we are even though we now live in Adelaide.  Can ring up any time and he's happy to take the call.

I am used to an investec so was looking for a private bank offering. BOQ is a little more complex opening from here where commonwealth makes the online opening streamlined.

thanks for the feedback, maybe ill just make the effort and go with BOQ. I mean we can always just change if need be

From RSA, I would start with say Commonwealth because they make it easy for applications from outside Oz. Then when you get here you can look around.  Usually one of the conditions of most banks is that you must have a transaction account/cheque account where your salary is deposited to qualify for a mortgage.  That's been our experience any way.  Nothing stopping you from moving accounts later though.

Hi Everyone,

Do you need to have plane tickets book already to show proof of arrival when opening a bank account from SA?

In short the answer is no.

You can open an account very easily from SA and online with Commonwealth up to three months before you arrive. They were flexible with us in that the arrival date ended up being later and that was no problem.  The proof of identification is provided once you arrive in Australia. Just bear in mind if you move money over you cannot access it until you arrive in Oz and present your identification.

I believe with NAB and Westpac you can also easily open accounts, online and up to 12 months before you arrive.

As a conclusion to this I eventually decided on BOQ specialist bank. It was a bit of schlep to get the accounts open as we had to courier some certified documents to them but it was a good fit for us. They offer us a 90% homeloan on a 457 (TSS visa) and a lot of the banking perks I am used to with Investec. We will have to maintain our SA accounts for a couple of years at least as we have assets here still to deal with and costs to service.

Thank you again to this wonderful forum and its endless help.

I tried with them and they said I needed an aussie address and phone number and could not help me. I really liked their credit card with no international transaction fees.

I gave up and opened a BOQ Specialist instead
