Arvind
Hi Everyone, Do you know if any support (govt. or otherwise) is provided to immigrants that have recently moved to Aus and want to further their studies at an Australian University? I live in Sydney and came in on a 190 with prior work experience (banking). Before enrolling in further studies, thought it may be useful if someone has already been through the process and able to offer some advice. Thanks everyone, this site has been an excellent source of info.
RYLC
Only citizens get government support for university. You might be lucky and find a bursary but they are often targeted at school leavers so a very very long shot.

bbop
If you are a commencing student from 1 January 2018, you will be enrolled in a fee paying place and will have access to a FEE-HELP loan. As per Higher Education Reforms Fact sheet: http://studyassist.gov.au/sites/studyassist/helpfulresources/pages/hereform-faqs You may also be eligible for Austudy. The family income is used to assess this - not just yours, making the thresholds less generous. Details here http://studyassist.gov.au/sites/studyassist/helpfulresources/faqs/pages/faqs This is currently the case, but from 2018 permanent residents will no longer qualify for common wealth support places and will be full fee paying domestic students. As a result, the reforms will offer residents the fee help option, so it's a loan on full fees.
SandraDee
bbop has this not been rejected together with the changes to the citizenship proposals last week? I assumed it had as they were all part and parcel of one bill which did not get passed. I know they are going to resubmit the bill in July 2018 with some changes. Would love to know if anyone knows otherwise as we cracked open the champagne to celebrate getting the lower fees again!
Husky
I understood that the proposed changes to study assistance for permanent residents went before parliament last week and was blocked (see article from 19/10). If the higher education bill is passed at a later stage, then permanent resident students can apply for fee HELP loans. Think this is only for first time students. My daughter has applied for uni in Melbourne starting 2018, so hoping for a CSP place or at the least assistance with a loan. Very grateful that the Australian government will help in some way #loveaustralia https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2017/oct/19/coalition-appalled-at-nxt-decision-to-block-28bn-in-higher-education-cuts

I have tried contacting them again for an update, but so far no response. I also want to study next year and although CSP is not suppose to be available anymore to permanent residents, at least there was going to be help in the form of Feehelp. I might have to wait until the citizenship is processed now.....
