Robbie_P
Hi All, We planning on driving from Sydney to Adelaide, which is about a 16hour drive. As we have kids, we plan to split the drive into two, ideally stopping halfway. Do you guys have any recommendations for a good stop halfway between Sydney and Adelaide?Regards,Robbie

Riekie
It doesn't really matter if you're just gonna sleep there which is pretty much all you'll have time for with a 9 hour drive which often is not only a 9 hour drive, especially with kids (toilet breaks, regular stops to stretch the legs and allow them a bit of a run around to get rid of some energy etc.) You're gonna be absolutely knackered no matter which route you choose. HansaPlease
Having driven both ways to Sydney and Adelaide, but from Melbourne, I would definitely do the longer trip on the first day and the shorter trip on the second. Makes it mentally so much easier if you wake up on the second day knowing you only have to travel half as far as the day before. It also means you can stop to smell the flowers on the second day and not be completely worn out when you arrive in Adelaide. SYdney to Mildura would be good, plenty of decent accom there but remember that 12 hours can easily turn into 14 with stops... ENjoy the adventure, I'm jealous! Robbie_P
Are there quite regular petrol stations along the way?
Riekie
Fill up where you can - even if you don't need to -when you hit the long stretch. You won't get stuck without petrol, it's not that remote, but you never know how far to the next one, so just fill up anyway.
Bob
The half way point is Hay, in the middle of the "Hay plains".This is like the Karoo, and is just flat countryside for mile after mile following the Murrumbidgee River in the distance.Hay is a long way from nowhere, over 100 kms to the next town, so make sure you've got enough fuel at Narrandera to make it to Hay.If you have, make sure in Hay that you have enough fuel to get to the far side of the Hay plains at Balranald.Everywhere along the way are towns every 50 kms or so and all have petrol / diesel stations there, so fuel's no dramas while you still have a quarter of a tank (other than the Hay plains). The first bit of the trip is interesting going over the Great Dividing Range, but once onto the far side, it's boring countryside until you reach the Adelaide Hills.Get stuff for the kids to do on the way.
