Retrenched!!!!

CandiceM

Question

Hi all

My husband got news today that he has been retrenched or made redundant as the Ozzies call it. We have been in Perth now for nearly 12 month (next week) and this news has come as a big blow to us. We were just starting to sort out our docs for PR, as we were promised sponsorship... Now I don't know. We can't go back to SA as we have nothing left here, but if we don't find another sponsor by 16 January we might be forced to return. My advice to anyone on 457 visa apply for PR asap, as you really don't want to find yourself in this position.

Candice

What industry is hubby in?? Maybe post some vague detail - not too much on the net - but just enough to give us all an idea? Maybe someone somewhere knows of an opportunity and networking may just be the answer.

If you don't mind - I'll add you to the old prayer list. I really do hope and pray that he finds something else soon and that no return to SA is in the future for you guys.

Good luck - and post those details on his job asap!!!

Hi Candace

So sorry to hear. I think this is not just bad news for you but for everyone on a 457. I sent our application to Perth this morning for PR, just hope we can get it asap.

I will keep you in my prayers and hope for the best. Also let us know what your hubby does, maybe there might be someone somewhere that can pull some strings for a jobsponser.

Thinking of you

Thanks everyone for the support and wishes. and Legaluff please add me to the list i need as much prayer as i can get!!

He is an electrical engineer specialising in building services. A sort after skill normally, but with this econmic crisis (the reason given for the redundancy), my optomism has taken a bit of a backseat

Its still a bit unreal, this company offered us so much in terms of getting us out here. they were unbeliveable with relocation packages etc. and now well its a total shock to the system. have already had my first drink of the day just to get the nerves settled. i think perhaps I have been a bit casual about this whole immigration things since we had absolutely no hassels and problems getting here, well this has certainly brought me down a notch or two. :ilikeit:

Anyway now on seek and any other job site i can find to post his CV and apply for jobs and more jobs!

Candice, it sounds as if your hubby is really in a good industry. I know heaps of people in the building side of things and, in terms of the large contracts, there is still work going around. Make sure that your hubby's current employer gives him a really good reference, with a comprehensive reason as to why they have had to retrench him. People really do place more value on Aussie experience when you're job hunting...

That's very sad news for you & your family and a reality for everyone on a 457. I hope your hubby finds another sponsor soon!!

Have you already started your PR process? In that case, would you not be able to obtain a bridging visa?

No unfortunately we have not started the pr process yet. In fact we only went for the fingerprints on Friday for police clearance how is that for timing? We will know more as to what they will still do for us tomorrow when they send me more information. Right now there is still a possibilty of sponsoring for PR or though I have no idea how they plan on doing this. Whatever they do i will make sure EVERYTHING is in writing and that I have references etc in writing as well.

Thanks again for all the support, its nice to know I am not alone here.

I am so sorry about this! How terrible!

Your story has only convinced me further that PR is really the only way to go for our family. I need to know that i am safe and settled and if it takes me to 2010 to get there - so be it!

Thinking of you!

Hi Candice ,

I feel for you .My son who is in Melbourne, also got retrenched today !This is not as bad for him ,as it is for you,as he is at UNI but he is still really devastated , luckily is on a permanent visa so will start looking for something else .I wish you all the best with finding ano sponser soon !

P.S.Not that it makes any of us feel better but I also heard that my cousin who lives in South Africa was retrenched today, so I think it is happening everywhere.

I'm sorry to hear about your Hubby's job loss. I've been made redundant twice before and know how much it stinks. Have you considered approaching DIAC and asking them for advice? I've found that if you approach them and let them know exactly what is going on (especially now with the credit crunch which isn't your fault) they might show you that they are humans after all and care about people.

I had an incident when I was still on my work permit where I had applied for PR, but hadn't been granted PR yet. I changed jobs and applied for a new work permit. While I was waiting my current permit expired. So I went to immigration all panicked that they were going to kick me out only to have them laugh at me for worrying. They said they don't mind at all that I was an "overstayer" as my permits were always valid and I was upfront with them
