Flights to Cape Town

If one fly's Qantas from Sydney to JHB and then connect onto Cape Town, do you have to collect your luggage at JHB international and re-checkin for a domestic to Cape Town? What if I fly business or Prem Economy and my bagage weight allowance is too heavy for a domestic to CT?

Is flying via Singapore more convenient than from Sydney with Qantas? My issue with the Qantas flight is it's a day flight making the trip seem so much longer. I live on the Gold Coast so need to fly to Sydney or Singapore anyway.

Are there any other conveninet flight routes?

Usually when entering a country you have to clear customs at your port of entry, which in your case would be Johannesburg. So if you can find one of the airlines, on the Asian routes, that perhaps flies from Brisbane into Asia and then onto Cape Town Direct, it would mean you clear customs in Cape Town.

I found that Qantas will fly direct Brisbane to Singapore, then Singapore Airlines to Dubai and then Singapore Airlines Dubai to Cape Town.

Check out the others as well.

Can only answer the first question. Yes, you have to collect your luggage at JHB International and re-checkin for domestic.

If you book through an agent they will usually arrange for an international allowance through to your destination even if you have cleared customs. If you go from business to economy you will have a problem. If you move around the country between arriving and departing you will have a problem unless you buy extra baggage allowance.

Just remember this. When Quantas fly from Sydney to JHB they go via the Antarctic. On many flights I could see ice burgs out the window.

If you think about the shape of the earth, its shorter to fly down then go back up. For example, Sydney to Durban is 23 hours if you go via Perth. Its 17 hours if you fly via the Antarctic.

The flight times do vary depending on a lot of factors. But make sure you check to see how long you will be in transit for. It can differ wildly. It is enough that I don't fly Singapore to Durban any more even though Singapore airlines are amazing.

I have an additional question to add to my original enquiery.......

Im flying Qantas Prem Economy from Sydney to Cape town. For the Sydney to JHB leg im allowed 40kg of luggage. The connecting from JHB to CT is with SAA 2 hours after arriving in JHB. SAA dont have Pre Economy so I suppoe it will be economy to CT (?). Will SAA honour the 40kg or will they charge me for an additional bag (extra weight)?

What if we stay overnight at a hotel at OR Tambo and fly the next morning to CT, will that impact the baggage weight allowance?

My partner checked this out with Qantas - he is flying to Perth on SAA (using his airmiles) and then Qantas to Sydney. Quantas' website says that "If you check in your baggage for a multiple sector journey, usually the baggage allowance of the most significant carrier in your itinerary will apply." (http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/checked-baggage/global/en).

I believe though that the flights have to be within 24 hours of each other.

From what he understands the same should apply with a connection flight on SAA, but I guess that you will have to contact them to confirm.
