Car insurance

Who did you choose to insure your vehicle with?

Are there any insurers to be avoided?

You'll get many many different responses. They differ a lot by region and depending on your circumstances.

I would advise one thing though- be an Insurance Tart! Look at changing insurers every year.

It seems there is no real reward in loyalty, and you can always find a better deal somewhere else when the time comes to renew.

Fully agree with Hansa please. Always keep an eye out for better deals.

Thank you, we went with AAMI, but it seems expensive, $80 per month for a Hundai i30 2013 model? Maybe it is because we do not have a "history" in Australia and our South-African history is not considered.

We were with AAMI and had no complaints. Have now switched to Woolworths because they were cheaper. Will play the field again next year.

Something I discovered is that your insurance is cheaper if your car is paid off. I don't know why perhaps because the insurer does not need to settle with the bank. The insurance company will not know when you pay your car off so make sure you call them and get your new rates when you reach that point.

Agreed with above! You will get a good rate in the first year, then come year 2 and you will get a renewal notice with a 17% -20% increase. Change each year.

there are none that I am aware to steer clear of. I have used AAMI, GIO, SGIO, Allianz.

The only one that proves time and time again to be the most expensive is RAC!

Indeed. They suck you in with "benefits" for years of memberships.... And they reward you with increasing annual premiums despite your car losing value.

Depends a lot on where you stay - when I moved from Perth to Canberra and got my slack rear into gear, I found that Canberra was about $8 cheaoer per month ...

I vaguely recall reading on this forum some time back that if you get a letter from your SA insurance company stating that you have no-claims and provide it to your new insurer, they will adjust your premium favorably. Is that true? Is it worth getting the letter before I leave?

Try coles insurance. I have found them to be very competitive. No issues with previous no claims history or the like.

Agreed - We pay $60 a month for a 2010 Forester (Value $20k with $600 excess)... Will still need to see what happens when we hit 12 months.

BTW - they did not ask any questions about where we were from - they did ask when last we claimed which we have not in the last couple of years... :-)

I just switched from AAMI to coles yesterday! They have a price beat guarantee so we saved $100 a year..and my excess is less by $75! Now paying $660 a year.

This for a Mitsubishi outlander 2010 not under finance.$20 400 agreed value.

Ps, if anyone need life insurance or funeral insurance try "let's Insure" they beat real insurance every time! Friends of mine got insurance for her mum with them.

Good luck
