Gunner
This sounds great! Is Joburg the expo's only venue in South Africa?

monsta
This event could be !ore than about just making contacts. Its always useful to get to know what the Aussies call your job. E.g. a creditors clerk is accounts payable here. Its also good to kow what sort of work is out there and where you would need to go to get it. For example if you want to work in finance, Sydney CBD is the place. If you want to work in warehousing, logistics, etc..then warehouse alley is the place for you. Warehouse alley is where the M4 and M7 motorways meet near Sydney. It helps a ton with recruiters if you live close to where the jobs are. Nobody wants a 2 hour trip to work. It also helps if you know what kind of work is available. For example, some of the bigger warehouses in Aussie are highly automated (e.g. search YouTube for Dematic Big W). I am sure warehouses in RSA aren't as automated. You don't want to be off guard when the recuiterer asks if you know Xero, swisslog or other software they use here.Remember recruiters are terrible in the big cities. They often expect you to know if you can do the job and whether you will be happy doing it. So doing your homework can greatly help you land a job.

wraighle
Hi allSorry to say this but that expo was a complete disappointment! It was a total waste of money as far as I'm concerned. I didn't get anything from there that I can't already get on this forum.
Sunnyskies
Hi allSorry to say this but that expo was a complete disappointment! It was a total waste of money as far as I'm concerned. I didn't get anything from there that I can't already get on this forum. Wraighlie, can you give a run down of the exhibitors? We went in 2008 and would agree with you. Exhibits were mainly mining related. The banks were there as well getting people to open accounts. Anything we were interested in was knee deep in people and we struggled to talk to anyone. We left disappointed.
wraighle
Sunnyskies, there was 13 exibitors-The British Council,Biddulphs International,Canadian Visa Specialists,Crown Relocations,Forex Capital Foreign Exchange,Osbourne Recruitment,Migrate 2 Oz,Paws Resort,The Government of Queensland,The Government of Victoria,iH Language Lab Johannesburg,Santa Fe and Working In New Zealand Recruit. The two I was interested in (government of Queensland and Victoria), after waiting about 30 minutes in the line, basically gave me a pamphlet with a website on it and they told me to go onto the website. You didn't miss anything!
Sunnyskies
Lol, we've been in Australia 6 years now. no thanks to the expo.I was more curious to see if employers were attending. Answer appears to be no.
Riekie
Maybe 20 years ago, employers from Australia would line up for representation at a south African immigration expo - unfortunately, with so many "degrees" and other qualifications falsely obtained in recent years - even by the highest levels of government - and the quality of training going for a loop, South Africans are no longer sought after for their skill & expertise. This is the sad truth.
