Been in Aus 5 years but for personal reasons may need to go back for about 2 years. Yes I intend returning to Aus. I am an Aus dual citizen.

My question is probably in the 'how long is a piece of string' category. ...

I would like to know how much per month a Hospital plan costs for an individual? Just the basic cover for the emergency stuff. I am in my fifties. I used to be with Discovery and enjoyed the Virgin Active gym reduction with them.

I know there are many permutations to the cost but just a ball park figure. R2k....R3k....R4k p.m.?

On a side note, will a person in their 80s get a Hospital plan cover if they returned to RSA.

I doubt you would get away under 3-4k a month mate. A person in their 80's may get cover, but I assume it would be at a massive cost, and filled with disclaimers and waiting periods and other clauses.

Basic Hospital plan for my Husband, me and our 2 kids under 12 last year was R4000 per month at Discovery.

I pay around the 3k mark for a decent hospital plan (this includes my gap cover) for myself, husband and daughter. This is not with discovery and as per my own research I would be paying for the equivalent cover with discovery.

I think you could get cover for someone in the their 80's but I think they would impose waiting periods and restrictions on the cover. Best plan is too email discovery and ask the questions.

Just a word of advice - get GAP cover. It's relatively inexpensive (I pay about R150 per month for my family of 3). Most medical aids do not cover more than 200% (if you are lucky) of hospital rates and many specialists charge well into 400% of medical aid rates. If you find yourself in hospital for major surgery you would look at having to pay about half of all the doctors bills yourself!

Same as Kanniewagnie we are paying just under R4000 for Discovery's Coastal Plan. That is for me, my wife and twin 11 year old boys. It includes a savings account for medicine, dental etc.

Best for me is through Vitality we get 25% off all healthy foods at Woolworths, and also great discounts on Quantas, Emirates and BA flights! We just saved R5000 on flights to Europe!
