The closest to the city is Sunbury, which is about 40km and has a train service which takes 45mins.Areas to perhaps avoid = Sunshine, Footscray, Braybrook, St Albans, Deer Park, Frankston (central), Werribee (central), Dandenong, Eumemmering, Endeavour Hills, Hallam, Noble ParkFor Rental Properties (unfurnished)They will always have window coverings, either curtains or blinds and there will be a cooktop and oven, sometimes even a dishwasher. If you want to live rather than exist, then these are the things you should look for when you rent, not in any order:Screens on all windows and doors No big windows or living areas facing west, summer sun from 12h00 to 21h30 Ducted central heating Ducted evaporative cooling which will cool the complete home and is cheaper to run than air conditioning Air conditioning if no evaporative cooling, bonus if you have both. Just remember summer can hit 43 degrees, so if there is only an air conditioner in the lounge, then that is where the whole family will probably sleep! If the house has eaves it will be cooler in summer Water is expensive, so if you have a small garden, so much the better If you need to use public transport, check that it is available and where the bus route ishttp://www.realestat...r...nf=rbs&a=sfFor Buying PropertiesThey will always have window coverings, as it is the norm to sell the house with your curtains and blinds.http://www.realestat...r...nf=rbs&a=sfHousehold Furniture HireNow this is unusual for us....you can rent anything, by the week, by the month and when you are done you just call them to come and pick it up again. So let us say you get a rental home, but your container is still six weeks away, you can rent all your furniture needs including tvs, videos, fridges, washing machines, etc. for that period. Can be pricey though.http://www.yellowpages.com.au/search/listings?clue=rental+furniture&locationClue=Melbourne%2C+VIC+3000&lat=&lon=&selectedViewMode=listCar Hirehttp://www.rentabomb.com.au/http://www.acerentalcars.com.au/car-hire-melbourne.htmhttp://www.abel.com.au/http://www.advancecarrental.com.au/http://www.rentforless.com.au/Jobshttp://www.seek.com.au/http://www.careerone.com.au/http://mycareer.com.au/http://jobsearch.gov.au/default.aspxhttp://jobsearch.gov...ks/default.aspxSchoolshttp://www.australia...rne-schools.phpUniversitieshttps://www.google.com.au/search?q=university+listing+victoria&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=fY_AVPDNFtfn8AWfioCwCQTravel by Public Transporthttp://ptv.vic.gov.au/journey#jpsearch%5Baction%5D=showPlannerhttp://www.metrotrains.com.au/tickets/Travel by Train in Australia countrywidehttp://www.seat61.com/Australia.htmChild Care Melbournehttp://www.careforki...CFRylYAod8meh0QPersonalised Number PlatesJust in case you fancy something special on your number plate - cost at present in Victoria is around $395http://www.vplates.com.au/Cost of GroceriesClick on the link below, if you need a post code then enter postcode 3429, and use Sunbury, enjoy the shopping!http://www.coles.com.au/http://www2.woolworthsonline.com.au/https://www.aldi.com.au/ (if you wish to save money)Shopping for the homehttp://www.oo.com.au/lp/home-couture/http://www.harveynorman.com.au/http://www.justasecond.com.au/http://www.ikea.com/au/en/http://www.pinefurniture.com.au/http://www.daregallery.com.au/http://www.furnituregalore.com/http://www.australianhardwood.com.au/http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=au&l=en&s=genhttp://www.spotlight.com.au/http://www.earlysettler.com.au/ (my favourite shop)http://regalsleepsolutions.com.au/http://www.snooze.com.au/http://www.domayneonline.com.au/http://www.fortywinks.com.au/Shopping Centreshttp://www.melbourne...opping/centres/Melbourne's Official Websitehttp://www.thatsmelb...Pages/Home.aspxHope this helps all those heading to Melbourne! QACR
Can I ask why you said to avoid Werribee?
Mara
This was from general feedback I got from people living in the surrounding areas. There are apparently some areas that are not so great. I do not have personal experience as I have never lived in that area.

Mara
Hi Roxanne, it is a difficult question to answer, as we all have totally different tastes, so I suggest you do some online trawling, I append some sites for you below:Remember whilst trawling, the apartment/unit/house, in general, should have window coverings, cooktop and oven, some even have fridges and dishwashers.Shopping for the homehttp://www.oo.com.au/lp/home-couture/http://www.harveynorman.com.au/http://www.justasecond.com.au/http://www.ikea.com/au/en/http://www.pinefurniture.com.au/http://www.daregallery.com.au/http://www.furnituregalore.com/http://www.australianhardwood.com.au/http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=au&l=en&s=genhttp://www.spotlight.com.au/http://www.earlysettler.com.au/ (my favourite shop)http://regalsleepsolutions.com.au/http://www.snooze.com.au/http://www.domayneonline.com.au/http://www.fortywinks.com.au/If you do not find amongst these what you are looking for then give me specifics and I can try and make suggestions of where to look for you. zoot
Another thing to remember is that there is a big market in 2nd hand furniture and I don't mean poor quality either. Its a good option to look at when starting out, allows you to get the basics whilst you figure out the value of the money, where to shop etc and especially when you are shopping on Rands vs Dollars. Apart from the usual op shop offerings, there is also Gumtree and advertised goods on community noticeboards on facebook. There is also Ziilch, Freecycle and Trash Nothing where you can pick up stuff for nothing. Depending where you live there are also regularly scheduled hard waste collections where people put stuff on the nature strip they no longer want for council to collect. It then becomes a big shopping day as people pick up odds and ends they have a use for.
