Crossedover
I know this may sound like a silly question BUT does the airline care whether your stuff is packed in suitcases or boxes? We have suitcases but I was wondering whether we would have to beg borrow and steal more or we could just pack a 20 kg box?A very 11 th hour question but let me know if you have packed in boxes or in a box or two? Thanks so much
MyTimeNow
I myself took suitcases, but I did see some travelers with boxes. Perhaps check the airlines website to see if there are restrictions on the size of the boxes. But I think you'll be fine with boxes. Alternatively, I also saw quite a few travelers with those blue/red striped bags, I think you can get them at Pep or Ackermans. Just be careful of being over the weight limit! I was 1kg over, and it wasn't even a full flight but they hit me with R800 per kg charge!!!
Crossedover
Thanks Candice, that would have "bitten by backside ".... I am sure they get commission on that! I know I will get my best answer from the airlines but they are not awake as early as just forum junkies!!
rozellem
PEP bags all the way!
Mara
There are size restrictions on the size of boxes so you must definitely check that out. My sister went back to RSA after a holiday with her stuff in bags to make it lighter. My husband just taped them up with packaging tape. Alida
We took PEP bags. There are two sizes. We took the big ones, I would recommend the smaller ones. Waaaay too easy to have a too heavy bag, and the big ones go through oversize luggage, which has another checkin place. If you would like to keep things simple, put all your extra stuff in the PEP bags, be sure to put in non-breakables only. The bags get handled rather roughly. And tape the handles together, otherwise 'they' grab the bags by one handle only and it tears. PEP bags are OK not to wrap, just tape the zip with serious tape . We came over with seven big PEP bags, worked quite well for us, since all our luggage went through oversize luggage. Crossedover
Like the pep idea guys!! will be popping in to one of SA's favorite stores today! Thanks x
rozellem
Buy the pretty ones for a couple of Rands more. Then you can store stuff in them here, like winter clothes, toys, ski gear, etc. I have those pretty black and white ones, on top of a white wardrobe. Its looks like I have styled it to be that way, but complete chance really.
Alida
We got a nice idea from my brother and it worked wonderfully. We bought cattle tags (or you can buy baggage tags) and number them. Not just say 1,2,3, but 1 of 8, 2 of 8, 3 of 8, etc. You put them on your suitcases/bags with cable ties. You keep a list where you keep note of the contents of each bag. By the time you arrive here, your brain cells are of no good, then you can refer to your list if you want something quickly from a suitcase / bag. Worked for us, I guess it depends on many things ... like whether you travel with little ones, whether you fly directly or with stayover, etc. We did both, so it was an absolute necessity to give ourselves the grace to not have to remember anything except where we kept the list !!
Riekie
The benefit of boxes over suitcases is the weight - some suitcases weigh up to 13kg before you even have anything in it yet! We used duffel bags - they're huge and super light and we're still using them for travelling for that reason. Not a tear or a scratch or any damage after 10 years and many travels - they're super strong! We used the K-Way ones in the largest size - you'll be amazed at how much you can fit into them and because they're flexible, you don't have hard sides limiting the way in which you organise the stuff inside. Crossedover
I know it was 6 weeks ago now but we bought lots of extra stuff over in 2 pep bags... Had them plastic wrapped and they worked like a charm! Definitely can recommend PEP bags
