HannesBronkhorst
HIHave a problem on our hands...We are planning on moving to Perth but we are Afrikaans and have two kids, 6 months and 2 years. What do we do about schools as they only know Afrikaans. Is there any double medium schools? Afrikaans-English.If we can send them to a Afrikaans pre-primary, to a double medium primary school and then to a English high school it would be perfect, but is that a option?Would appreciate any advice. Mara
Sorry, it is English schools all the way. I do believe that there are some high schools that perhaps offer Afrikaans as a second language, but there are no schools that teach all their subjects in Afrikaans. However, do not worry too much, they will learn to speak English so fast, it will blow your mind! Kanniewagnie
Hulle is nog baie klein, die taal-aanpassing sal vir jul groter wees as vir hulle. Dit is die laaste ding waaroor jul hoef te bekommer.
rozellem
Hannes, they will be just fine. Come over and continue to speak Afr to them. Their brains will automatically separate the two and you will give them the brain stimulating gift of bilingualism. Dont listen to the peanut gallery, just do what you think is best. The kids will absorb English by osmosis. Ours are Aussie born (3 and almost 5), and we never speak Eng to them. Numbers, colours, etc. only ever in Afr. My eldest was tested by a paed a few weeks ago and got above average for his Eng language ability. He could not believe the kid had another language stashed away in his head. rikamarie
We came over when our daughter was 2 and she didn't speak a work English. The speech therapist advised to keep on talking afrikaans as this forms the base of their language skills. So she arrived here, no English and went to daycare, she picked it up so so so fast, we were amazed. So don't worry about!

OubaasDik
Hannes,Like it or not, your kids will b etaught in English (unless we set up Afrikaans schools like some etthnic groups do). He may even learn another language like French, Indonesian, Mandarin due to the LOTE (Languages other Than English) policy - good luck finding Afrikaans there ...My son came over at about age 10 - family had been speaking only Afrikaans to him (it was up to me to speak English, you see).He fitted in beautifully and now, when I contact him, I am amazed at the fact his English is perfect, and not what I more or less expected.Up to you to keep up the Afrikaans, though.
