Faduv
Morning to all the members in Adelaide.Got the exiting news this morning that my wife's application for state sponsorship has been approved. Now we just need to wait for our invite and then all systems go.Its been a rollercoaster ride, like many of you know, but one is never quite prepared for something like this. We started of with me to be the main applicant but things didn't work out barring the positive VETASSESS (after re-assessment) and good IELTS scores, but occupation was taken of lists before we could apply for SS. 7 months and lots of $$$ and nothing to show for it.Much praying and seeking God's direction on this we decided to go with my wife as main applicant, having her own business we thought it might be a push as it is more difficult for VETASSESS etc.Thank God - 3 months later (must be some kind of record ) and my wife got - IELTS (7's and 8's), Positive VETASSESS (3+ years of experience) and SA state sponsorship for half the $$$ we spend on my stuff.Point being - Here we are, introducing ourselves. We are in our late thirties with twins (pigeon pair) 7 years old, finishing grade 1 this year. Our planned move is Jan 2016 as the visa's will most probably only be granted in April/May next year so we decided best to plan it this way, obviously if we can land jobs we will come over sooner.First question of many - - We looked at some areas and we always fancied living a country life style - thus Stirling seems like a good area and we are quite impressed with Stirling East Primary school, but then we stayed early in our years of marriage in Bloubergstrand, so also love living so close to sea to go running etc. So Port Noarlunga or Woodcroft seem good area's??What are your opinions?? suggestions??Thanks
Tamara HDU
That's great news...congratulations! It took us ages to get here after a few mishaps with the application. The relief when finally approved is an amazing feeling so I know what you are feeling. The Adelaide hills regions were always really appealing to us as well. I think that it's a combination of being a great lifestyle and one that we would have liked in SA if it was safe to live rural there. The only downside I can think of is temperature...it's hotter in summer and then colder in winter in the hills. I'm biased towards Port Noarlunga because I live here! There are a lot of very popular (and affordable suburbs) south of the city. Woodcroft, Aberfoyle Park, Happy Valley and then a little further (but with access to the new train line and expressway) are suburbs like Seaford and Port Noarlunga South. Hallett Cove is also very popular but there are plenty of Poms! I meet people all the time who had a suburb in mind but everything changes once you go exploring. Rural areas just up the road from me (12 minutes)include the stunning area of McLaren Vale and Willunga is just a little further. McLaren vale is like Paarl or Stellenbosch. If I didn't live in Port Noarlunga it would be my idea spot! All the best with your plans and decisions. Take care.
K-Vdm
Congrats on getting this far. It is quite the journey! We live in Hallett Cove (after moving down from Golden Grove) and we LOVE being so close to the ocean! The beaches here are breathtaking and going for a late afternoon swim is one of our favourite things to do! I can't comment on Hills living but it does seem really nice and it really is beautiful. It's quite a way to the city though and I guess the biggest deciding factor would be where you find a job.. Difficult to try and judge prior to that unless you come to Aus without employment and take it from there?Everyone will have opinions on suburbs, I can only give mine for where we are living now (as we haven't been down South long enough to know more about the other areas), but so far, we LOVE Hallett Cove.Feel free to ask any questions, will be glad to help where we can!Good luck with the last stretch!
Spider
it will also come down to where you plan to look for work (obviously largely depending on field of work)....as stirling is stunning but a way out of the cityhallet cove etc is a drive south but train etc to come into the city is good...down south is a popular choice as its a bit cheaper, but has the best beaches around (plus close to awesome wine areas)I live in the west (near Henley beach) and I plan to never leave the suburb lol..... Minks
Faduv I really hope that your visa grant comes through quickly. We have recently (last week) received ours and will be arriving (hopefully) during the first half of 2015. Good luck with the last stretch of this part of your journey! Faduv
Thanks for all the responses. Moved out of house into rental yesterday. We would need to carefully think what we will need to bring over, just to many stuff. At this stage we will come over without work, unless we can get work towards the second part of next year. Strange feeling that this may be our last festive season in good old south africa. Edited December 2, 2014 by Faduv
nicknel
Hi FaduvExciting times ahead of you.We arrived 31 Oct. And are loving Aus. I work in the City but take the train in from Semaphore. We are moving to Hallet Cove next week. Very excited. K-Vdm maybe we will bump into you sometime Port Noarlunga was our initial choice too but got a rental in Hallet cove. Anything from there to Hallet Cove is beautiful. We love the hills too. We will see how things go but might move to the hills in a few years when we get sick of the beach. Since were from JHB the beach is still like a new toy to us. Good luck and enjoy the ride! Faduv
Hi Nicknel,We also decided after more research to stay in that area. Early 2000 we stayed in Blouberg strand, both of us growing up inland I know what you mean about the beach. We have twins that will go to grade 3 when we arrive in Jan 16. Schooling options are also more than in the hills, while rental prices for the beginning are also better in PN and Hallet Cove than Stirling. Thanks FD
