457 and driving license conversion

I am not sure if this has been asked previously, but in your experience do those on a 457 visa have to convert their RSA licenses to Aus? My husband has just been to convert his, and was told that you only have to do it if you have PR, and within 3 months. He is happy to keep his SA license if it means he doesn't have to worry about demerits, but wanted to check that this was correct. Please advise. Thanks so much.

If you're on a 457 you aren't required to convert but it certainly does help with the 100 points of identification when you need it.

Just remember that if he keeps his RSA license then it will need to remain current.

Thanks HEOJJ, good to know. Luckily we have just renewed our SA licenses so we are sorted for the next few years.

Just to give you an idea of much easier an Aussie license makes things. Most places will ask for your ID, if you produce a SA license you will then more than likely get asked for a bank card, passport and third document to prove 100 points of ID. If you have an Aussie license you hand that over and you're done, no other ID required.

Agree with HadEnough..... - everyone uses their driver's licence for proof of ID - I reckon you'll find life a lot easier if you convert. It's a simple process.

If I'm not mistaken I think there is a three strike rule if you're driving on a foreign license depending on the offense. If you get caught speeding three times or are in an accident and it's your fault and I think a DUI might even carry a heavier penalty like complete disqualification and being forced to redo your license here.

Regarding the demerit points and a foreign driving licence, please don't "drive it like you stole it"!!!

Each State/Territory has its own legislation (similar in most respects) regarding people driving in that State/Territory with licences that were not issued by that State/Territory. In Queensland, for example, if a person with a foreign licence accumulates four or more demerit points on that person's traffic history (not licence) in any 12 month period or 12 or more in a three year period, the person's authority to drive on Queensland roads is suspended for exactly the same period as if that person held a Queensland licence.

I wouldn't try that ^^^ here in Brisbane, there are so many unmarked police cars it will make your head spin! One minute it's just a regular car, next it's got flashing lights & sirens coming right at you.

My husband had good intentions of doing the conversion, but he says as soon as they heard he was on a 457, they wouldn't give him the form to complete. He really wants to comply, but they didn't seem too interested in helping him. He said he'll go back another day and see if he can find someone else to help him. :whome:

Thanks Nev, that's the plan! I'm hoping he can get all these things ironed out before my son and I arrive there in Jan so he'll know where the more helpful people are.
